What you can expect

Enjoy a Kyoto City-designated Important Machiya featuring an authentic tea room and tranquil tea garden near Fushimi Inari. Guests are welcomed by staff upon arrival and may freely explore the historic machiya.

Inside, you can experience hands-on Japanese culture by touching traditional tea utensils, viewing rare tea room features, and enjoying simple Ikebana flower arranging using various vases.

Highlights include the nijiriguchi (small tea room entrance), tsurigama (hanging kettle), stone tea mills, tea jars, and traditional mizuya preparation area rarely seen up close by visitors.

All guests can enjoy complimentary guidance on how to whisk their own matcha.

Activity itinerary

This experience takes place at Shizuhamo (Seasonal Harmony), a traditional Machiya dedicated to tea ceremony and ikebana culture. Take the Keihan Main Line from Fushimi-Inari Station (Platform 2) on any train except the Express. After a 5-minute ride, get off at Sumizome Station and enjoy a short 5-minute walk to reach Shizuhamo. Stepping through the gate, you will feel as if you have been transported 100 years into the past. The traditional Japanese rooms are filled with items that evoke a time before electricity, gas, and running water, such as authentic paper lanterns (andon), charcoal fires, and water jars. Here, you can enjoy a hands-on experience of the tea ceremony and ikebana, arts once cherished by many in Japan. You can also learn how to whisk your own matcha with guidance from a tea master. A unique highlight of Shizuhamo is the opportunity to encounter and touch rare elements of a tea room, including the small nijiriguchi (crawling-in entrance), tsurigama (hanging kettle), hanayose-byobu (flower display screen), stone tea mills, tea jars, and the mizuya (prep area).
