Activity itinerary

Guimaraes Castle (Pass by)

The birthplace of a nation. This Romanesque hilltop castle is where Afonso Henriques was born and raised, and where in 1128 he began the fight that would turn a county into an independent kingdom.

Igreja de Sao Miguel do Castelo (Pass by)

The first king's chapel. This is the Romanesque church where Afonso Henriques is said to have been baptized, right beside the castle where he was born.

Paco dos Duques de Braganca (Pass by)

The duke's Burgundian palace. This 15th-century ducal residence was built in the style of a Burgundian manor and now houses period furnishings and tapestries.

Rua de Santa Maria (Pass by)

Porta do Burgo: the gateway into the walled medieval town. Pass through this stone arch, once part of the town's fortifications, to begin exploring the streets inside.

Largo da Oliveira (Pass by)

Rua de Santa Maria: the town's oldest street. Walk down this cobbled medieval street, lined with centuries-old houses, that has connected the castle to the town centre since Guimarães was founded.

Praca de S. Tiago (Pass by)

The merchants' old square. Once the heart of medieval trade, this arcaded square is surrounded by granite houses and was a hub of daily life in the walled town.

Padrao do Salado (Pass by)

The monument to a medieval battle. This stone monument commemorates the Battle of Salado, one of the key moments tying Guimarães's history to the wider medieval conflicts of the Iberian Peninsula.

Igreja e Convento de Sao Francisco (Pass by)

A 15th-century Franciscan convent. This peaceful religious complex reflects Guimarães's long monastic tradition and offers a quieter counterpoint to the bustling historic centre.

Jardim do Largo Condessa do Juncal (Pass by)

Tanques de couros: where hides were tanned for centuries. Nearby stood the tanning tanks that once supported Guimarães's medieval leather trade, a trace of the everyday industry that helped the town prosper.

Largo do Toural (Pass by)

Largo do Toural: the grand square that closes the walk. This lively, palm-lined square marks the transition from the medieval town to the modern city centre, a fitting place to end your self-guided journey through Guimarães.
