Leave Porto behind and enjoy a scenic drive through the Portuguese countryside as you head to Guimarães, renowned for being the birthplace of the Portugal. The city is a fine example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town. It has iconic landmarks that date back to the 15th century, such as the Guimarães Castle, and it won the 2012 European Capital of Culture award.

Explore the historic centre, home to Guimarães Castle, constructed in the 10th century and the residence of the first Portuguese king, Afonso Henriques. Then see the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a medieval estate and former residence of the first Duke of Braganza. Pass by Olive Square, where you can observe daily life and admire the ancient architecture of its main church as well as the beautiful Padrão do Salado.
