What you can expect

Begin your day with a hotel pickup in central Guangzhou, followed by a scenic drive into the countryside. Along the way, hear the fascinating storey of Kaiping’s Diaolou—multi-storey watchtowers built by overseas Chinese during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Arrive at Zili Village, home to some of the region’s most photogenic and best-preserved Diaolou. Stroll along stone paths winding between water-filled rice paddies, admire the dramatic silhouettes of the towers, and step inside several to explore their history and architecture. Climb one of the towers for panoramic views over the countryside.

Next, visit Li Garden, the former residence of a wealthy overseas Chinese merchant. This estate blends classical Chinese garden design with European architectural influences, reflecting the global connections of Kaiping families. Wander past koi ponds, rockeries, covered walkways, and elegant pavilions, while your guide points out the details that fuse East and West in harmony. Step inside European-style villas to appreciate the personal wealth and cosmopolitan tastes brought home by migrants from the Americas and Southeast Asia.

Continue to Chikan Old Town, a historic riverside settlement shaped by returning overseas Chinese. Walk along cobbled streets lined with Qilou buildings—arcades on the lower floors with traditional Chinese facades above. Explore quaint cafés, nostalgic shops, and local snack vendors, capturing the early 20th-century prosperity in photographs and stories.

Conclude your day at Maxianglong Village, one of Kaiping’s most tranquil Diaolou clusters. Nestled within a bamboo forest and winding canals, the towers here feel naturally integrated into the landscape. Walk along quiet stone paths, enjoy the serene atmosphere, and reflect on how architecture and nature coexist in southern China.
