◼︎ GOLDEN PAVILION
Located in northwest Kyoto, the Golden Pavilion (or Kinkaku-ji) is not only a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site but also one of the most sought-after destinations for tourists visiting Kyoto. This magnificent temple was originally built as a villa for the revered 14th Century shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The Golden Pavilion, known as Kinkaku-ji is covered with real gold leaf. It is a Zen Buddhist temple located in northern Kyoto and it is one of the most famous landmarks in the country. The top two floors of the pavilion are covered with gold leaf, giving the structure its distinctive and stunning appearance.
The gold leaf was used to demonstrate wealth, power, and devotion. It is of a resplendent beauty, especially when reflected in the surrounding pond, makes it a popular tourist attraction and a significant cultural treasure of Japan.
Experience the allure of Kinkaku-ji and let its golden splendour leave you in awe.
◼︎ NIJO CASTLE
In addition to exploring Kinkaku-ji, this tour also includes a visit to Nijo Castle, another UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, known for its historical significance. In this place I will clearly show you the history of the struggles between the samurai, the feudal lords and the control of the Shogun, the powerful military dictator. The end of the samurai era and the beginnings of Japan's modernization.
The castle showcases stunning Edo period architecture with beautiful woodwork and intricate designs.
Experience the unique “nightingale floors” that chirp when walked upon, an ingenious early security system.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it provides valuable insights into Japan's cultural and historical heritage.
Nijo Castle offers a blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty, making it a rewarding experience for any visitor to Kyoto.
◼︎ Nishiki Market
Nishiki Market, also known as “Kyoto's Kitchen,” is a vibrant retail market located on a narrow, five-block long shopping street. With over one hundred shops and restaurants, this bustling marketplace offers an extensive selection of food-related items such as fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware.
The atmosphere at Nishiki Market strikes a pleasant balance between lively and hectic - making it an ideal spot to immerse yourself in Kyoto's culinary wonders.
●Finish: 12:30
The tours finish at the entrance of Nishiki Market. I will explain the origins of this market and then you can choose yourself what you want for lunch among hundreds of offers. As it is a place very visited by foreign tourists all the explanations are in English.
