Head out on a full-day adventure filled with water activities such as high-speed jet boating and slow canoeing along the pristine Dart River Valley, plus a scenic back-country drive to view filming locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Leaving Queenstown by bus, you drive past Lake Wakatipu with its magnificent Alpine scenery and into the Dart River Valley and Mount Aspiring National Park.

Upon arrival at the glacier-fed Dart River, board your awaiting jet boat. Inhale the sharp air as your hour-long ride speeds past ancient beech forests, sheer cliffs and ridges, slowing to inch through walls of rock to reach your Funyak launch site in the heart of the national park.

Hop aboard the Funyak, an inflatable canoe, to leisurely explore the river and hidden side streams. Your guides teach you about the local flora, fauna and areas of historical interest such as the Pounamu (greenstone) that made the river an important trading route for the early Maori people.

Next, stop at a forested glade by the water, with spectacular views of Mt. Earnslaw, to enjoy a buffet lunch.

After lunch, canoe until you reach Paradise, where rolling farmland meets beech forest and the beautiful Diamond Lake. Hop into a 4WD for a back-country drive through Dart Valley and listen as your guide points out filming locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy along the way.

When you reach the rustic town of Glenorchy, board the bus for a relaxing journey back to Queenstown.

This is a must do, unique, breathtaking scenery and FUN! Starts with a coach ride from your hotel to the head quarters for the tour company in Glenorchy. Here you are given instructions on how to be safe and get dressed for the action ahead. Kitted our in wetsuits and matching boots, fleece and a wind-jacket and life jacket, you are put back onto the bus and taken to the river to start the jetboating! Had a fabulous driver Ed and loved the 360 spins!! After this you get into your Funyaks and paddle back down the river in groups, it is too beautiful to be able to describe. A relaxed lunch is served then another 40 or so minutes. The water is freezing and beautiful, be daring and take a swim!! Expect to have wet feet at least for this. I would go again tomorrow if I was still there

Unfortunately the day we went was not the best weather. It rained heavily the night before making the canyon too dangerous to enter, and it was still raining in the morning, making it cold and wet everywhere but indoors. This is always a risk with outdoor activities. We were offered a full refund. My three kids were reluctant to go, but I invoked my executive powers (as did most of the others booked on the tour that day) and elected to go. We suited up in wetsuits with micro fleeces (provided by Dart-river tours), leaving our own clothes secure (and dry) in a locker. Despite the weather, and getting wet, I remained warm throughout the trip. I had a blast on the Jet-boat ride, despite the rain on the face. The fun-yaks were great, and paddling easy despite the rapid river. Lunch was good with plenty of food for all. Would have been a great tour if the sun had been out.

Amazing experience; must do if you are able...requires a moderate level of physical activity pulling your canoe up river, deflating and loading the boats on a trailer (be prepared to work).
