Overview

Jinja City, located in eastern Uganda, is the adventure capital of East Africa and the source of the Nile River. It offers thrilling activities and combines natural beauty with rich cultural heritage. Major attractions include Ssezibwa Falls, a stunning natural site with cultural significance, Namawojjolo market, Mabira Forest, Jinja Nile Bridge, and the source of the Nile River.

Ssezibwa Falls is part of the Ssezibwa River, which splits into two streams before cascading 17 metres down rocky cliffs.

Namawojjolo market is known for its “muchomo” (grilled meats), particularly chicken pieces.

The Mabira Forest is one of East Africa's most extensive remaining tropical rain forests, supporting over 300 tree species and a vibrant wildlife.

Ssezibwa River Falls

Nestled within the verdant embrace of Uganda’s lush landscape lies a hidden gem, a testament to nature’s artistic prowes. This enchanting natural wonder, a haven of cascading waters, verdant flora, and ancient legends, has remained a well-kept secret, awaiting those with a thirst for exploration. Upon arrival, the senses are instantly enveloped in a tapestry of sensations. The music of rushing water greets your ears, setting the tone for the enchantment that awaits. The sight that unfolds is a spectacle of nature’s artistry—two waterfalls cascade from differing heights, through the rocks, creating a harmonious chorus of cascading water that pours into a deep pool. This cultural heritage site is home to over 200 bird specials and primates like the red tailed monkeys. Before reaching the falls, you will an optional stop over at Namawojjolo. Here you can enjoy Uganda delicious street food.

Namawojjolo is popular for its roasted plantain and nyama choma (BBQ - meat and chicken ). Its a delight for travellers who frequent the market to quench their thirst and hunger. One of the most unique items here is the roasted Chicken that tastes like no other you have eaten else where.

Mabira Forest

This is one of Uganda's largest surviving Natural Forests covering an area of 306 sq km. Mabira Forest is predominantly a secondary forest that has grown for more than 100 years with minimal disturbance hence accumulating an impressive diversity of wildlife which include: 312 species of trees and shrubs and some of the shrubs have been discovered to be unique to Mabira forest and not found anywhere else. It is home to 316 bird species, 219 butterflies, 97 moths and 35 species of small mammals such as Duikers, Bushbucks, Squirrels, Red-tailed Monkeys, and the Uganda Mangabey a primate which is found only in Uganda. Mabira forest has well established trail networks in 3 different areas of the forest where you can do a nature walk and discover the amazing nature in this beautiful jungle. Experience tranquility as you walk under the canopies in what can be termed as forest swimming. Do you know forest swimming is said to drastically enhance immunity?

Jinja Nile Bridge

The iconic Source of the Nile Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge across the Victoria Nile. The bridge is the region’s first stay cable bridge. It replaced the Nalubaale Bridge, which was built in 1954

Finally we arrive at the source of River Nile. Here the world’s longest river starts its 4000 mile journey to the Mediterranean sea through to Sudan and Egypt. When you arrive at the source of the Nile, your first encounter are the beautiful gardens in the vicinity. Next is the several craft shops with mostly African pieces sourced from all over the country. You can then visit and photograph several monuments which have a historical attachment to the Nile. For example, Mahatma Gandhi requested that some of his ashes be sprinkled in the Nile after cremation along many other rivers in the world. Another monument is that of John Speke .It marks the spot from where the British adventurer John Hanning Speke stood to behold the “mighty Nile” You will be sure to enjoy a truly Uganda Cuisine
