Description

A day’s escape from Bangkok to visit Ayutthaya, once a great capital and trading hub that connected Siam to the rest of the world. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this best way to see this ancient city is by bike. From the impressive ruins of Ayutthaya to the grandiose summer palace of the kings, this easy bike trip takes you off the beaten track onto the local trails through ancient Thailand.

Along the Chao Phraya River emerges, Ayutthaya- a broad grassy plain with chedis of various sizes erecting from the ground. These weathered brick structures are remnants of a powerful city before it was sacked by the Burmese in the mid 18th century and burnt to crumbling ruins. On your bike, explore the impressive Ayutthaya Historical Park and see the stately stupas and chedis that guard these grounds. Cycling in and around the ancient city walls, you will see the towering chedi of Wat Yai Chaimongkol with an enormous statue of the reclining Buddha.

Visit the Wat Phra Mahatat, famed for the picturesque tree roots that ensnarl its embedded Buddha relic. Fruitful jujube trees still surround what is left of the Old Royal Palace. You will get a chance to admire the impressive Wat Chaiwatthanaram that was built during the reign of King Prasat Thong as a memorial for his mother. The last segment of the trip is a pleasureful ride to the summer palace at Bang Pa-In as we escape into the countryside passing local communities that line this part of the Chao Phraya River.

This was my first expedition in Bangkok and man it was a good one. Our tour guide Tony was awesome, super chatty, fun, knowledgeable, and spoke English very well. The temples are mind boggling-ly stunning and hard to believe such structures were made so long ago. The history behind some of these things mirror the sentiment of Egyptian pyramids being gifts to royalty rather than wholly purposeful buildings. It just goes to show the appreciation and dedication to beauty and architectural aesthetics that’s long lost in the modern world. Happy I went!

Fun day to Ayutthaya, a beautiful UNESCO Heritage site. Lot's of ruins from the Ayutthaya period in Thai history. An easy bike ride between various sites and along back roads. Very safe. Great lunch right on the Chao Phraya river. Our guide Jick was great very informative and interested in our guest experience. Worth the time and money spent.
