What you can expect

After 50 minutes of driving we will get to Calles - the beginning of our trip. First, we'll have a coffee in a local bar and start the hike. The initial 3 kilometres are a very gentle ascent until we get closer to the aqueduct. Here we will start going up the single track trail, while gaining a bit more elevation. Thankfully, this ascent is quite short and soon we will be at the Peña Cortada aqueduct. The path takes us straight through it, as we make our way through the tunnels carved out in rock. Eventually we will get to the bridge - the most impressive part of the aqueduct, which we will cross to get to the other side.

The second part of the hike will take us through Chelva. We will get first views of the town when we leave the aqueduct. Chelva has an interesting history, with three old historical areas (Moorish, Christian and Jewish) being its distinct characteristics. We will get to walk the winding streets of the town and learn about its history.

The final part of the hike goes along the Tuéjar river. As we leave Chelva, we will descend towards the river and take the path that follows it all the way back to Calles. This will be a nice contrast to the beginning of the hike. The arid mountains surrounding Peña Cortada aqueduct are quite different to the lush vegetation down in the valley. Finally, we will have a post-hike drink in Calles and return to Valencia.
