What you can expect

Our first stop is at the beach of Varosha, also known as the “Ghost Town”. There you will have the chance to swim in the crystal-clear blue waters of the beautiful golden sand beach of Famagusta, whilst taking in the eerie sight of the abandoned buildings which have been desolate since the Turkish invasion in 1974. You can also explore part of the abandoned “Ghost Town” that opened for the public for the first time after 46 years in 2020.

The next stop is the Monastery of Saint Barnabas, founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church. There you can also visit the Icon Museum of the monastery and the tomb of Saint Barnabas who martyred in the area in 52AD. Our trip continues with a visit to the ancient Greek city-kingdom of Salamis, founded around 1100 BC. Time will be given for a guided tour around the archaeological site of Salamis, which includes a beautiful ancient Greek theatre and marble columns, Roman Baths and a Gymnasium. The visit to St. Barnabas & Salamis is optional. In case you don't want to join, you will have 2 hours of additional free time in Famagusta.

We then drive to Famagusta Old Town Centre, where 2 hours of free time will be given for lunch (optional extra) and sightseeing. During your free time there, we highly recommend a walk around the Venetian Walls that surround the old part of the town and a visit to the Gothic Church of Saint Nicolas and Othello Castle, which William Shakespeare mentions in his play “Othello” (optional extras).

On the way back, drive along the fenced, sealed-off area of the “Ghost Town”. Once one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, this area now remains abandoned and trapped in a time lock.

NOTES:

  • Passports or European Union Identity Cards are needed on the day of the excursion.
  • The entrance fees for Saint Barnabas and Salamis are not included in the price and can be paid (in cash only, EUR 6.00) on the day of the excursion.
  • Clients who do not wish to visit Saint Barnabas and Salamis can have extra free time in the Famagusta Old Town Centre.
  • For this excursion, clients staying in the Larnaca area are transferred to and back from the excursion bus near Agia Napa with a minibus, free of charge.
Pick up can be different than drop off.
