What you can expect
Explore the lush tropical forest of Dominica on a 6 - 8 guided tour through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. It is considered a relatively challenging hike with various natural features; waterfalls, rivers, hot springs and funaroles. The lake in itself is considered one of the most unique natural phenomenon in the entire world. It is a literal boiling lake, Also knows as a flooded fumarole. At the end of the hike, there is an option to swim through a majestic slot canyon filled with pristine clear fresh water, and rocks that has been carved by water for millions of years. The swim usually takes about 5 minutes
HIKE DESCRIPTION:
The hike to the Boiling Lake in Dominica is one of the island’s most challenging and rewarding adventures. It’s usually a 6–8 hour return trek (depending on fitness), covering about 8 miles through rugged rainforest and volcanic terrain.
Here’s what the terrain is like along the way:
The hike can be separated into three parts. It begins in the lush rainforest on a gradually sloping, wood-covered path that can be slippery, especially after rain. This section is about 45 minutes - 1 hour long. Prior to the second part, you will descend to the Breakfast River, which will signal the end of the first part. Then the climb begins! The climb to the top of the mountain is about 30 - 40 minutes long (Depending on fitness), and this will take you to the top of Morne Nichols. The climb consists of several steep sections followed by short plateaus. After the climb is done, the descent begins. It is a steep descent into the Valley of Desolation; this part is about 20 - 30 minutes long. The terrain on the descent includes both muddy and rocky sections. The first 10 minutes are a steep muddy descent, followed by a steep, rocky descent where you will need to use your hands. Arriving at the Valley of Desolation will conclude the 2nd part and signal the start of the last section. This section usually takes about 45 mins - 1 hour. Generally, this section is mostly flat and quite interesting as you walk through a volcanically active area. This section includes fumaroles, hot springs, and boiling water. There will be 3 short climbs after a 20 minute “flatish” section. After the last climb, there will be a 2 minute flat walk and you'll arrive at the lake!
At this point, you refuel by eating lunch and some snacks, take photos and begin the return which is the same way. Round 2!
