What you can expect

At the indicated time, we will meet at Plaza de la Constitución, where we will begin this guided tour of Valencia de Alcántara, a town located on the border between Spain and Portugal.

Thanks to its proximity to the neighbouring country, this town enjoyed a period of prosperity during the Early Modern Period. We will learn about the history of Valencia de Alcántara as we walk through its streets and visit its most important monuments.

From Plaza de la Constitución, we will walk to the Church of Rocamador, where the marriage between Isabel of Aragon, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, and King Manuel of Portugal took place. Inside, the church houses important works of art, such as Berruguete's Cristo de las Batallas (Christ of the Battles) and a painting by Luis de Morales, nicknamed the “Divino.”

We will also stroll through the Gothic-Jewish quarter, where we will see the Synagogue and the Interpretation Centre, a key site for learning more about the relationship between the three cultures that coexisted in this town. During our tour, we will also learn about the influence of the Order of Alcántara in this part of Extremadura.

After 1.5 hours, we will conclude our guided tour of Valencia de Alcántara back at the meeting point.
