What you can expect

  • Your unforgettable day begins with a comfortable pickup from your hotel in Osaka or Kyoto, followed by a scenic drive through the Japanese Alps towards Takayama — a charming mountain town known for its beautifully preserved Edo-period streets and relaxed atmosphere.

Your first stop is Takayama Old Town (Sanmachi Suji), famous for its traditional wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and quaint local shops. Stroll the narrow streets, taste local snacks, and enjoy the nostalgic ambiance that feels like stepping back in time. Continue to Takayama Jinya, the only surviving Edo-period government office in Japan, where you can explore tatami rooms and learn about Takayama’s rich history.

Optional Stop: If you wish, you may visit the Miyagawa Morning Market (when operating hours allow). Browse local stalls selling fresh produce, handmade crafts, and regional specialities, or spend more time exploring Takayama Old Town instead.

Next, journey deeper into the mountains to reach Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village known for its iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses, designed with steep thatched roofs to withstand heavy snowfall. Stop at the Shirakawa-go Observatory Viewpoint for a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire village—one of the most photographed spots in Japan.

Head down into Ogimachi Village, where you’ll walk among traditional houses, rice fields, and peaceful mountain scenery. Visit the Wada House (optional entry), the largest and best-preserved gassho-style home open to the public, to experience how villagers lived centuries ago.

This private tour is fully customisable. Guests may spend more or less time at each location or skip optional stops according to their preferences while enjoying all of the tour’s core highlights.

After exploring the village at your own pace, enjoy a relaxing drive back to Osaka or Kyoto, completing a perfect day of history, scenic beauty, and authentic Japanese countryside charm.
