A paper published in October 2023 claimed that Gunung Padang is 27,000 years old, which would make it older than the pyramids of Egypt and Gobekli Tepe in Turkey. However, the journal's publisher, Wiley, retracted the study due to flaws in the methodology. The study's critics say that the radiocarbon measurements used to date the human presence at Gunung Padang were based on soil samples, not artefacts.
Archaeologists say that ceramics recovered from Gunung Padang suggest that humans have been using it for several hundred years or more. Gunung Padang is widely considered a dormant volcano.
