What you can expect

  • Learn to make northern Chinese dumplings in Flushing, New York's largest Chinese community, in this hands-on two-hour class from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Meet inside the lobby of Flushing Plaza, 41-61 Kissena Blvd, Flushing, NY 11355, then visit a nearby Chinese supermarket together to buy fresh ingredients and learn how local families choose fillings, wrappers and seasonings. Next, walk through old Flushing, passing P.S. 20 John Bowne School, to a home-style classroom at 4140 Parsons Blvd. After washing your hands, learn to make half-moon northern dumplings with pleated edges, mixing the filling, rolling the wrappers and shaping each dumpling by hand. While your dumplings cook, hear stories about dumpling culture and traditions. Then enjoy a meal of the dumplings you made, with beer and soft drinks included, and, if time allows, finish with Chinese tea. Any extra dumplings can be packed up to take home.
