Lake Kaindy is about 400 metres long, reaching depths of nearly 30 metres at its deepest point. Altered by limestone deposits, the water maintains a bluish-green colour. The lake contains trunks of submerged Picea schrenkiana trees that rise above the surface of the lake.

“Kolsay” means “Valley Lake” in the Kazakh language, for these freshwater lakes lie in a valley in the Northern Tien Shan Mountains some 300 kilometres from Almaty. The three lakes – Verkhneye (Upper), Mynzholki (Middle) and Nizhneye (Lower) - are located at 2,700, 2,250 and 1,800 metres above sea level, respectively.

The canyon consists of a formation along the banks of the Charyn River of approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) (90 kilometres (56 mi) is also stated). The river has a total length of 393 kilometres (244 mi). The river originates from the Tian Shan Mountains that range over the arid semi-desert to eastern Almaty.
