What you can expect
Begin your day at Jozani Forest, a lush sanctuary and the last indigenous forest on the island. Follow your naturalist guide through towering mahogany and oil palm trees to find the Kirk’s Red Colobus monkey. These primates are found nowhere else on Earth and are famous for their unique colouring and playful behaviour.
Explore the Mangrove Boardwalk, a surreal landscape where land meets sea. Wander across wooden bridges over the salt marshes to see how these vital trees protect the island’s coastline and provide a nursery for tropical fish and crabs.
Next, head to the village of Jambiani to discover Kuza Cave, an ancient limestone jungle cave. This “hidden gem” is more than just a swimming hole; it is a site of deep spiritual significance for the local people.
Descend into the cavern to find a vibrant turquoise pool of fresh water. The water is naturally filtered by the limestone and stays a perfect, refreshing temperature year-round. Relax in the “Secret Garden” surrounding the cave, where you can often hear local musicians practising traditional Swahili drumming or watch colourful butterflies dancing through the sunlight.
Conclude the adventure at the Michamvi Peninsula, home to the world-renowned The Rock Restaurant. Perched atop a coral outcrop surrounded by shimmering blue water, it is the most photographed building in Africa. Capture the ultimate “Instagram” photo of the restaurant “floating” in the sea.
Depending on the time of day, you may walk across the sand to reach it (low tide) or take a small wooden boat across the turquoise waves (high tide). Enjoy the sea breeze and the panoramic views of the Indian Ocean before your comfortable transfer back to your hotel.
