What you can expect

Begin your journey with a hands-on injera baking experience inside a local home. Learn how teff is fermented, how absit is made, and how to pour and bake injera on a traditional mitad. Taste your fresh injera with homemade shiro, gomen, and spicy local dishes.

Continue with a full Ethiopian coffee ceremony performed by Oromo women — roasting, grinding, brewing, incense, popcorn, and the symbolic three rounds: Abol, Tona, Bereka.

Next, explore Bishoftu’s traditional fermentation culture. Visit a household where tella, tej, and araki are produced using natural, clay-based systems. Watch the distillation process, learn about gesho leaves, see fermentation pots, and try small prepared samples.

Take a guided walk around the scenic crater lakes — Bishoftu, Hora, Babogaya, and Bishoftu Guda — and enjoy birdwatching with chances to see flamingos, pelicans, kingfishers, storks, and more.

Then, travel into the countryside for an Oromo village cultural experience. Meet local families, learn about agriculture, taste traditional Oromo cuisine like Chuko and Marqaa, experience Buna Qalaa (butter coffee), and enjoy storytelling, craft demonstrations, and local hospitality.

Finish the day with a peaceful boat ride on Lake Babogaya, surrounded by volcanic cliffs, birdlife, and beautiful lake reflections.
