What you can expect

  • Discover the stories, cultures and treasures of Aotearoa New Zealand at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum, one of the country’s most significant cultural institutions and heritage buildings.

Explore three floors of fascinating exhibitions and collections, from Māori and Pacific heritage to the diverse cultures and communities that have shaped Auckland. Learn about the great Polynesian voyages that brought people to Aotearoa and discover stories spanning generations of New Zealand history, art and culture.

Please note: Te Marae Ātea Māori Court and the Pacific Galleries are currently closed due to essential remedial work. However, visitors can experience Te Ripo o Te Moana: Taonga Through Time, a brand-new three-year exhibition opening in September 2026. The exhibition showcases customary and contemporary Māori art, including whakairo (wood carving), raranga (weaving), kōwhaiwhai (customary painting) and whakakai (body adornment), while exploring stories of migration, iwi traditions and mana moana.

Te Ripo o Te Moana, meaning The Whirlpool of the Sea, celebrates the growth, creativity and flourishing of Māori art and culture in Aotearoa.
