Mount Meru – 4-Day Trekking Tour
Embark on a 4-day trek to the summit of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Pass through diverse vegetation zones, spot wildlife, and enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate (1500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)
Start from Arusha and head to Arusha National Park. After registration at Momella Gate, begin your trek with an armed ranger. Walk through open grassland, spotting giraffes and buffaloes, before entering acacia forest. Stop at Maio Falls for a picnic, then visit the iconic “fig tree arch.” Arrive at Miriakamba Hut for tea and snacks. Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3550m)
Follow wooden steps up a steep track. Reach “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at 3200m for a break. The landscape shifts to heath and moorland. Arrive at Saddle Hut by midday. Optionally, hike to Little Meru (3820m) for panoramic views. Have an early dinner and rest before the summit climb.
Day 3: Saddle Hut (3550m) – Socialist Peak (4562m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)
Begin the summit ascent at 2 am with headlamps. Pass Rhino Point (3821m) before tackling a more technical path along the crater rim. Walk on volcanic ash and rocks, reaching Socialist Peak in 4-5 hours. Watch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro and admire the crater below. Descend back to Saddle Hut for a break, then continue to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Momella Gate (1500m) – Arusha
After breakfast, descend via the northern route, a shorter 2-3 hour trek with chances to see elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and colobus monkeys. At Momella Gate, bid farewell to the trekking crew. Transfer back to Meru View Lodge for celebration and relaxation.
