MIHO MUSEUM

Nestled in the Shigaraki mountains of Shiga Prefecture, the Miho Museum was designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei and opened in 1997. Inspired by the ancient Chinese tale of the "Peach Blossom Spring," the museum harmoniously integrates architecture with nature. Visitors are guided through a tunnel and an elevated walkway into a geometric glass-roofed space hidden within the hills. The collection features exquisite ancient art from Japan, China, Egypt, and beyond, including bronzes, ceramics, and Buddhist sculptures. With its glass canopy framing seasonal views of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, the museum offers a serene yet awe-inspiring cultural escape. A must-visit for those seeking a dialogue between art, architecture, and nature in Kansai.
Koka Ninja Village
  • 2h
  • Admission ticket included
Located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Koka Ninja Village is an immersive theme park dedicated to the authentic culture of Japanese ninja. The village recreates historical ninja residences and training facilities from the Warring States period, where visitors can try hands-on activities such as shuriken throwing and wall climbing. Live demonstrations showcase traditional ninja weapons and techniques, while the on-site museum details the history, tools, and strategic wisdom of the Koka ninja tradition. Interactive experiences include dressing up as a ninja and exploring hidden passages. Ideal for families and culture enthusiasts alike, the village offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s legendary world of ninjutsu.
Omishonin Street
  • 1h
Nestled in the heart of Shiga Prefecture, Ōmihachiman is a historic canal town celebrated as the birthplace of the influential Omi Merchants. Preserving its Edo-period charm, the town is centred around the scenic Hachimanbori Moat, where willow-lined waterways reflect white-walled storehouses and traditional machiya townhouses. Visitors can enjoy boat rides along the tranquil canals, stroll through the stone-paved streets of the old castle town at the foot of Mount Hachiman, and explore well-preserved merchant residences and museums that tell the storey of its commercial heritage. The town takes on seasonal beauty with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn, while local specialities like Omi beef and red rice dumplings offer a delightful taste of the region. A visit here is a step into a quieter, elegantly preserved era of Japan.
La Collina Omihachiman
  • 1h 30m
Nestled in Ōmihachiman, La Collina is a whimsical dessert house that blends nature, architecture, and confectionery into an enchanting experience. Designed by architect Terunobu Fujimori, its iconic grassy rooftop and rolling green hills evoke a scene straight out of a fairy tale, often called a "breathing building." This is home to the renowned "CLUB HARIE" Baumkuchen workshop, where visitors can savour freshly baked ring cakes made from local ingredients and observe the baking process through viewing windows. The grounds also feature a café, a lifestyle shop, and serene garden paths, inviting guests to wander through what feels like a living pastoral painting. A visit here offers not just a treat for the palate, but a heartwarming escape into a storybook world.
