What you can expect

  • [Practical Information, Location, and Admission]
Located in Anhui Province, the Traditional Village of Hongcun (宏村) is a masterpiece of urban planning and vernacular architecture, famous for its ingenious ox-shaped canal system and its historic white-walled, gray-tiled residences, with more than 800 years of history dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and famous for being the setting for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Skip-the-Line Admission: Forget the hassle at the ticket desk. Your admission ticket guarantees direct and seamless access to the historic site.

How to Get There: From Huangshan North Railway Station, the most recommended option is to take the direct sightseeing bus to Hongcun (approx. 1 hour journey).

[The Ox-Shaped Water System and Must-See Spots]
The village was ingeniously designed in the shape of an ox (the hill as the head, the Yuequan Pond as the stomach, Lake Nanhu as the abdomen, and the canals or Shuizhen as the intestines). Your tour includes:

Nanhu Lake and the Painted Bridge: The perfect reflecting pool that mirrors the white walls and dark roofs, making it the most iconic photo spot in the village, next to the historic Nanhu Academy.

Yuequan Pond (Crescent Moon or Yueju): Located in the heart of the village, this semicircular pond flawlessly reflects the traditional residential architecture and the Wang family's Ancestral Hall.

Chengzhitang Mansion: Known as the “People's Palace,” this is the residence of a wealthy salt merchant that stands out for its monumental wood, stone, and brick carvings, the pinnacle of Huizhou architectural art.

Stone Alleyways and Canals: Stroll freely along the course of the water canals (Shuizhen), an infallible natural guide to avoid getting lost while discovering ancient residences such as Shurentang.

[Visiting Tips and Suggested Route (2.5 to 3 Hours)]

Route: South Entrance — Nanhu Lake and Painted Bridge — Nanhu Academy — Walk along the canal (Shuizhen) — Yuequan and Wang Hall — Chengzhitang Mansion — Traditional alleyways and exit.

Best Time: We recommend visiting early in the morning (before 8:30 a.m.) or at sunset to enjoy the tranquility and the best light for photos, avoiding the peak hours when tour groups arrive.

[Your Exclusive PDF Guide and Online Support]
To help you get the most out of your independent visit, we'll send you an exclusive PDF with recommended routes and architectural tips. Our human support team will be available via chat at all times to assist you.
