What you can expect
Step into the timeless atmosphere of Alatri, one of Lazio’s most fascinating ancient towns, where prehistoric engineering, medieval spirituality, and historic architecture come together in a truly unique landscape.
Begin your journey in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, the vibrant heart of the modern city and a symbolic meeting point between civil and religious life. At its centre stands the elegant Fontana Pia, while around it rise important landmarks such as Palazzo Conti-Gentili and the impressive Basilica of Saint Maria Maggiore. This Romanesque-Gothic church, with its iconic rose window and sacred façade, is one of the oldest in Alatri, built over an ancient pagan temple and enriched with medieval frescoed portals.
From here, continue into the historic centre, following narrow streets that gradually lead towards one of the most extraordinary sites in Italy: the Acropolis of Alatri. Enclosed by perfectly fitted Cyclopean walls made of enormous limestone blocks, this ancient fortress represents one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Roman defensive architecture. Walking along the ascent from Via Gregoriana, be surrounded by these monumental stones until you reach the impressive Porta Maggiore, with its iconic monolithic architrave.
Inside the Acropolis lies the spiritual heart of the city: the Cathedral of Saint Paolo, dating back to the 9th century. This Romanesque jewel stands harmoniously within the ancient walls, blending sacred architecture with prehistoric foundations. Inside, admire precious Cosmatesque decorations, medieval capitals, frescoes, and the richly carved wooden choir. The cathedral also preserves the relic of the Eucharistic Miracle of the Incarnate Host (1228), one of the most important religious traditions in Italy, housed in a dedicated chapel that continues to attract pilgrims and visitors.
Leave the Acropolis through Porta Minore, and encounter one of Alatri’s most curious historical details: the famous carved symbols associated with ancient beliefs of protection and fertility, offering a glimpse into pre-Christian rituals that still echo through the city’s stones.
Continue towards the Church of Saint Francesco, a striking Gothic building with a simple yet elegant façade and a large rose window reminiscent of Saint Maria Maggiore. Inside, discover one of the city’s most mysterious artworks: the Christ in the Labyrinth, a unique medieval fresco depicting Christ Pantocrator at the centre of a symbolic maze. This powerful image was designed as a meditative path for monks, combining spirituality, geometry, and symbolism in a single extraordinary work.
As the tour concludes, be left with a deep sense of connection to Alatri’s layered history: from Cyclopean civilisations to medieval faith, from sacred relics to symbolic art. Every corner of this city reveals a dialogue between past and present, offering an authentic journey into one of Lazio’s most underrated cultural treasures.
