Explore the beautiful backwaters of Alleppey (Alappuzha) on our traditional-style wooden canoe and discover the local life of Kuttanad.

Our canoe is inspired by the traditional Kettuvallam style of Kerala. Kettuvallam is the traditional way of making wooden boats, where the wood is joined using coconut fibres and tightened with rope. Even our roof is made with real coconut tree leaves, which helps keep the shaded area naturally cool.

The canoe is motorised and can travel around 6 km in one hour, allowing us to explore several waterways and villages comfortably. It can accommodate up to 4 adults. The boat sits very close to the water, so it feels almost like you are sitting on the water, giving you a close view of the canals, plants, boats and village surroundings.

We explore lakes, rivers, narrow canals, paddy fields and villages in Kuttanad, known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala. Kuttanad is a very green region, and many parts are located below sea level. There are around 10 villages in Kuttanad, and depending on the trip, we can explore up to 3 villages such as Kainakari, Chanamkari and Venattukadu.

Some smaller canals have low and narrow bridges, so only smaller boats can pass underneath them. We can also travel through larger lakes and open waterways, where you may see houseboats and other boats moving across the backwaters.

Along the way, you may see fishermen, farmers, paddy fields, rice harvesting, lotus fields, toddy tapping, floating houses, water hyacinth and other seasonal activities. You may also see different local boats such as school boats, public ferry boats, ambulance boats, police boats, fire and rescue boats, private boats and houseboats. What you see can change depending on the season and month of your visit.

Depending on the route, we can also stop for a village walk. This gives you a chance to explore the village on foot, see local homes and farms, experience the daily life of fishermen and farmers, and talk with local people.

Safety jackets are provided for everyone. Our captain is a local Alleppey person, speaks English fluently and knows the backwaters and villages very well. He can explain about local life, farming, fishing, boats and the places we pass during the journey.

We are two brothers running this experience along with Paddy N Canal Homestay. Before starting our own business, we worked in homestays, houseboats and kayaking. We have spent many years travelling through the backwaters and villages of Alleppey, so we know the area and its local life from our own experience.

Our goal is simple: to give you a friendly, relaxed and local experience of Kuttanad, with beautiful scenery, village life and a journey close to the water.
