The Pegmatite Vein: Unlike most Sri Lankan gems found in alluvial riverbeds, Meetiyagoda sits directly on the earth's largest primary pegmatite (crystalline granite) vein bearing moonstones.Shaft Mining ("Yati Illama"): Miners extract the stones using narrow rectangular vertical shafts dug 10 to 40 metres deep, reinforced securely with coconut wood beams and tree trunks to prevent soil collapse.Daily Yield: Workers use hand tools and water pumps to manage seepage, hauling up muddy gem-laden soil in iron buckets to yield an average of 50 to 100 rough stones per day
