What you can expect

  • The Sierra Negra Volcano and Sulphur Mines sightseeing tour by vehicle is a unique adventure that will allow you to explore some of the most impressive scenery on Isabela Island in the Galapagos. This tour combines hiking, geology, nature, and local culture in a complete experience, ideal for lovers of adventure and responsible tourism.

Visit to the Sierra Negra Volcano and the Sulphur Mines

The day begins with the pick-up of passengers at their respective accommodation. From there, we'll drive to the upper part of the island, specifically to the Tomás de Berlanga area. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes to the Galapagos National Park checkpoint, and then another 20 minutes to the rest point, where the hike begins.

The hike to the fumaroles is 3 km out and 3 km back, with an approximate duration of 2 hours. The trail begins with a descent down a staircase that leads to the edge of the caldera of the Sierra Negra Volcano, one of the largest and most active craters in the world. During the tour, you'll be accompanied by certified naturalist tour guides, who will provide you with information about the geology of the place, its eruptive history, and the ecological importance of the area.

The main destination is the Sulphur Mines, a fascinating site where you can observe active fumaroles emitting volcanic vapors and gases. The smoking ground, the smell of sulphur, and the mysterious atmosphere create an unforgettable experience. The geological formations surrounding the area look like they're from another planet, and are the result of centuries of volcanic activity. It is important to follow the tour guide's instructions at all times, as some areas may be restricted for security and conservation reasons.

    Stop at the Sucre Cave

After visiting the fumaroles, the sightseeing tour continues to the Sucre Cave. It is accessed via a trail of approximately 480 metres surrounded by vegetation typical of the humid zone. Inside the cave, you'll be immersed in the interior of a volcanic island, observing stalactites and stalagmites formed by water seeping over time. This part of the sightseeing tour allows for a more intimate connection with the geology of Isabela, and offers a different, quieter, and more magical exploration experience.

    Agritourism at a local farm

To finish the tour, you'll visit a local farm where you'll learn about the island's agricultural practices up close. You'll have the chance to tour tropical fruit farms and native plants, and learn about the sustainable techniques used by local farmers. You'll also be able to taste fresh produce harvested directly on the farm and enjoy the authentic flavours of the Galapagos.

This sightseeing tour offers a perfect combination of hiking, volcanic observation, underground exploration, and contact with rural life.
