Overview

This is a workshop which brings together history, ecology, craft and science, suitable for a wide range of ages (including children 5 year and older). You will get to learn interesting facts, identify some local plants and learn about their historical use. Finally you will get to use your hands to create your own work of art- a naturally dyed silk hankie.

Activity itinerary

You will meet me in my studio, where we will see examples of various important dye plants and samples of dyed fabric from my collection. I will spend some time introducing you to the history and craft of natural dyes, its relationship to local flora, and Cyprus folk textile traditions. We will extract colour from one or two local or seasonal plants. I will also introduce a simple tie dye technique, related to a lost mysterious tradition from a Cyprus village. You will get to create a colourful silk handkerchief, which you will take with you as a souvenir.
