What you can expect
Begin your journey with a scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the famous gateway to the Everest region. Enjoy incredible views of Himalayan peaks before landing at the iconic hilltop airstrip. From Lukla, start your trek by following a gentle trail towards Phakding. Along the way, enjoy views of Mount Khumbila, a sacred peak worshipped as the “God of Khumbu.” This holy mountain has never been climbed and holds deep spiritual significance for the Sherpa community.
From Phakding, continue through lush pine forests, suspension bridges, and charming Sherpa villages until reaching Namche Bazaar, the bustling economic centre of the Khumbu region.
After leaving Namche, head towards Dole, passing through quiet settlements and rhododendron forests. The trail then leads to Machhermo, a beautiful high-altitude village connected to famous Sherpa legends, including stories of Yeti sightings. As you move higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with wide open landscapes and closer views of Cho Oyu and surrounding snowy peaks.
Gradually ascend along the terminal moraine of the massive Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the Himalayas, before reaching Gokyo, a peaceful lakeside settlement surrounded by turquoise waters and towering mountains. Gokyo provides a perfect setting to experience the tranquility of the high Himalayas.
Spend valuable time exploring the remarkable natural wonders of the region. During your stay at Gokyo, visit the series of stunning blue lakes, beginning with the lower lakes near the teahouses. A short walk brings you to the third lake, known for its crystal-clear waters and reflections of the peaks. Hike north towards the fourth and fifth lakes, where the landscape becomes wilder and more dramatic.
A major highlight is the visit to Scoundrel’s Viewpoint near the fifth lake. This breathtaking viewpoint provides a sweeping panorama of some of the world’s highest mountains—Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, and Gyachung Kang—along with an impressive view of the sprawling Ngozumpa Glacier.
Another unforgettable experience is the climb to Gokyo Ri at 5,360 metres. Though the ascent is challenging due to the altitude, the steady climb rewards you with one of the most spectacular Himalayan viewpoints imaginable. From the summit, take in a 360-degree panorama of Everest and surrounding giants, with the glacier stretching far below. This moment often becomes the most cherished memory of the entire journey.
