We\u2019ve fallen in love with the beautiful beaches, the rolling hills, great food and wine, and the laid back lifestyle. We stay for a week or so just to soak up island life, but you can experience a lot in just one day on Waiheke. Expedia\u2019s local Kiwi travellers tend to spend 3 days in Auckland and that\u2019s just enough time to pack in a few hours on Waiheke.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re staying in\u00a0<a title=\"Expedia Auckland Holidays\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expedia.co.nz\/Holiday-Packages\/cheap-auckland-holidays.htm?brandcid=blog.article.waihekefamily.july_14072013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auckland<\/a>,\u00a0Waiheke (Maori for \u201ccascading waters\u201d) is only a 35 minute ride on the passenger ferry from the Auckland Ferry Terminal. The ferry ride is beautiful, passing by Motohui and Motutapu Islands and offering great views of the volcanoes of Browns Island and Rangitoto (where my husband proposed to me).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a great local bus service from the ferry once you\u2019re on Waiheke but an easier option might be to hop on a\u00a0<a title=\"Waiheke Island Explorer Tour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expedia.co.nz\/pubspec\/scripts\/eap.asp?GOTO=TSHOPSDETAIL&amp;LocationID=178233&amp;OfferingID=11631?brandcid=blog.article.waihekefamily.july_14072013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waiheke Island Explorer Tour<\/a>, which includes return boat rides, a 1.5hr tour and an unlimited bus pass once the tour is done if you want to stay for longer.<\/p>\n<p>Local taxis have reasonable fares and family-friendly mini vans, while there\u2019s also car hire right next to the ferry wharf.<\/p>\n<h2>Have breakfast in Oneroa Village<\/h2>\n<p>If you have young children in tow,\u00a0<a title=\"Delight Cafe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.delightcafe.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delight<\/a>\u00a0or Solar Eatery at the top of the hill both get the thumbs up from my kids. My girls and I will never forget having coffee together at\u00a0Delight\u00a0one morning<i>\u00a0<\/i>when two Orcas were spotted swimming in the bay below. Everyone rushed to the windows before scurrying down the hill to watch the whales play from the beach. If you don\u2019t need a highchair,\u00a0<a title=\"Wai Kitchen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.waikitchen.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wai Kitchen<\/a>\u00a0has stunning panoramic views of the beautiful Hauraki Gulf.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My family and I have made annual trips to Waiheke Island for the past three years.
