This hotel has loads of character. If you’re looking for something modern and high-tech, it’s probably not the place for you. But I felt like I got an authentic Yorkshire experience. The location is really good. Outside the city walls, so it’s easy to maneuver with a car. But only about a 10 minute walk from the center, so it was easy to get there (even in the middle of a rain storm, which I gather is not unusual). It’s unlikely I’ll travel again to York, as I feel I’ve checked it off the list. But if fate brings me there, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the Elmbank again.

Our one night stay was lovely. Fuss free, early check in with a cheeky upgrade, the room was clean, warm and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great the next morning. £18 for 24hr parking at the school. A short walk into York centre.

We loved that the hotel was in walking distance of the town centre, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle so was quiet at night. Felt safe, room was clean and a big room so great for the three of us sharing.

There was a problem with our booking (not the hotel’s fault) which the person checking us in dealt with professionally. Each contact with a staff member was positive - they were friendly and helpful.

Nice hotel with period/original features well positioned for walking in to York and racecourse. Not much parking however a school right next door offered ample parking at £18 for 24 hours.

Elmbank is a wonderful place to stay in York. The price is right, the building is gorgeous, the bar and restaurant are lovely & cosy spots to chill, the staff are friendly, the room was comfortable and decorated beautifully, parking was available.

This hotel has been decorated in an art deco style with lots of oak panelling. It’s quite dark inside but cosy on a winters day. Rooms were nicely decorated and generally in good order. The reception and breakfast staff were fabulous and they had gluten free options 👍👍

We had a courtyard classic room, which was excellent. Special mention to the gentleman on reception / bar, around midnight. Couldn’t have been more helpful and gave us plenty of insight & ideas for our break. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We really enjoyed our stay at the Elmbank hotel , cant comment on the food as we ate out , the only fault i had was room service came around at 10am and when we asked if they could come back later they said they would , we returned to our room later that night and it had nt been changed and no clean towels , a member of staff sorted this straight away , so wasnt to much of a problem , i would definately stay again , thanks for a lovely break .

Great visit to York
Hotel was just great, comfortable room, great food, breakfast was lovely. Room needed a little maintenance but noo issues, beautiful decoration and quality fittings. Best shower lve been in, water pressure amazing. Staff lovely and the building art deco inside, does not do it justice from how it looks outside, would definitely stay again.

Really stylish and large boutique hotel. Great service, breakfast and rooms. Room was somewhat cold due to a possible heating issue and age and style of building. However it was a cold weekend in Jan!

This place is like a hidden gem. It is a lovely building on the outside but the moment you walk inside, it kinda takes your breath away. The architecture/art that has gone into the place when it was built is amazing and they have kept everything almost original and even the modern decor is stunning. The room was brilliant. We got a free upgrade so that was nice. Really convenient location and parking. Staff were very professional and friendly. There were even staff there that weren't on shift that were being helpful. We were in the bar having a drink as a few of the staff were after their shifts and the night manager saw that we were looking at all the amazing architecture so he asked anither member of staff on shift to get us a booklet of info on all the history of the place and then came over himself to tell us about the place and give us a little tour. Just couldn't fault the place. Will definitely try and get back as we loved it.

Wonderful experience - beautiful hotel (rooms, lobby, restaurant), large room (triple lodge), yummy food, cute bar area. The restaurant is good, but they sometimes have events booked so it's not available - best to make a reservation to be sure. It's a bit of a long walk to get to the Minster (25 minutes), but not so far as it's not doable. Just bring comfy shoes!

This place was spacious and clean. There was a parking option, which was nice since we rented a car, however, it was first come, first serve, and you would have to pay 10 pounds a night for the parking. Staff was great and it was a lovely hotel.

Great for families
We stayed in a family room in the lodge section which was great. Lovely big room, and separate bed for the little one. There was a separate area with fridge and kettle. The bed was a bit hard, but otherwise it was absolutely lovely.

Terrible customer service.
This hotel looks inpressive and sadly that is about it. We stayed over the Christmas period and unfortunately the staff did not seem to want to work! No food service at all Christmas Eve, not even in the bar after 8pm. Room cleaning offered a drink instead of a room clean. Seriously, don't work in hospitality if you expect to not work key holiday periods. Parking limited. Certainly not a travellers hotel or 4* by its customer service. In fact, even a staff member thought it was 3* and that is being generous. Staff disinterested in complaints and don't even bother to speak with you about them. Leave this hotel for locals. Room was large but bathroom stone cold as no heating at all. Breakfast passable. Cleaning also leaves a lot to be desired. See dubious stains on upholstery. Would never rebook if in the area. Olde worlde doesn't replace good facilities and staff.

Not as expected
Disappointing stay for the price. The shower was clearly broken and flooded the bathroom when used. This was reported but not fixed during our stay. It was clearly an issue but reception did not appear bothered by this. I reported it to stop future guests complaining. The room was not a basic room however the window overlooked an alleyway with the most filthy window. Just small touches and cleanliness would have improved this stay. Very disappointing visit.
