Classic Maine Cottage short walk to beach, harbor, trails, park & village.

The Briars is a 19th century shingle style “cottage” located in the heart of York Harbor, Maine and a short five minute walk to the beach. Listen to the fishing boats as they depart the Harbor each morning, smell the salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze. The home has been entertaining guests for over a century, most recently as a bed-and-breakfast for the past 30 years. You’ll have plenty of room for gathering with family and friends including lots of space for lounging on one of the many porches/decks. Some of the rooms offer views of the harbor where time will slowly pass as you watch the boats come and go. 8 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms means plenty of room for the whole family without long wait times to take a shower! The charming home was renovated to include 5 new bathrooms (the other two of seven are already modern) and new furnishings to ensure you have a very comfortable stay. We offer one of the best per room/per night fees or per person/per night of any large rental in York Harbor.

Our home is in an ideal spot to enjoy the sought after environs of York Harbor. Guests can easily walk to the Harbor Beach known for its family friendly atmosphere. The Cliff Walk starts at the Harbor Beach and offers spectacular views of the rocky Maine coast and stunning Victorian mansions. The Hartley Mason estate is a beautiful public park overlooking the Harbor Beach with flower gardens and plenty of shade from the summer sun. Moulton Park is two doors down the street from us with a fantastic space for any outdoor activity with lots of sun and shade. The Fisherman’s Walk is steps away where you stroll along the river and enjoy views of the boats coming in and out of the harbor – including lobsterman with their fresh catch of the day. Fisherman’s walk brings you to the Wiggly Bridge-Steadman Woods where you can take a loop through the forest or continue walking to the historic York Village. York Village (less than five minutes away by car in case you lost track of how long you’ve been walking) was settled in 1624 (3 years after Plymouth Plantation!) and offers a rich array of historical buildings (e.g Old Gaol – one of the oldest jails in America; a one room school house; Jefferds Tavern; The Old Burying Ground featuring 18th-19th century carved tombstones; and the John Hancock Warehouse etc.).

The Harbor is rich in culture and fine dining. The York Art Association is located a few houses down the street from us. George Marshall store gallery is located through the Steadman Woods and has a series of art exhibits during the year (the curator lives down the street from our house). There are other small galleries and shops in the Village. York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, and Chapman Cottage each offer award winning dining and are all a five minute walk from our home. The Dockside Restaurant is located across the harbor (five minute drive away) and is a great spot to view the marina and have a great meal. The marina offers boat and kayak rentals for those wishing to experience some “ocean” culture.

The York area and surrounding towns offer a never ending list of things to do. Visit lighthouses. Go whale watching. Explore forts and historical sights. Enjoy the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Hike Mt. Agamenticus for breathtaking views of the ocean to the east and forest/mountains to the west (you can also drive to the top if you are feeling lazy and visit the nature exhibit in the old ski lodge). Shop at the Kittery Outlets (save this for those rainy days). Visit the York Beach boardwalk with an amusement park, bowling, arcade, shops, live entertainment, salt water taffy and more. Hiking-Biking-Boating-Sunbathing…or just reading a book in the many nooks of our beautiful home. You will love the relaxed pace of Maine. There is a reason our state motto is "Maine, the way life should be".

Looking to accommodate an even bigger group? We also have a 10 bedroom/8 bathroom property that is close by. We have a six bedroom home that we offer only very selectively that is in between the other two properties.

We had an amazing long weekend staying at The Briars! We were a large group of four families with many kids between us and the house was perfect for accommodating all the space we needed. It was so charming and had all sorts of features that enhanced our experience, such as the well stocked playroom and plenty of beach gear. The location was perfect! Short walk to the beach and several walking paths kept the kids busy and made life easy. Lance was an excellent host and was available for any help we needed or suggestions for things to incorporate into our trip. We loved our time in York and will certainly be back to The Briars again!!

The perfect York stay for a girl’s weekend!

A group of 9 girls and I stayed at Lance’s property this past weekend and it couldn’t have been more perfect. From Lance’s willingness to provide expert recommendations about activities in the area and where to eat etc., his thorough communication about everything we needed to know about the property, and the amazing property itself - I couldn’t recommend staying here more. Lance provided many thoughtful touches and even dropped off a bottle of wine and an amazing pie, we all commented how rare this type of hospitality is when renting homes these days! The house was immaculately clean and comfortable with plenty of space for 10 girls to spread out. The neighborhood was beautiful, we were able to walk to the beach and were just a quick drive to some delicious restaurants. Our group couldn’t say enough great things about the house, and we’re already discussing future opportunities to return!

Perfect vacation!

The Briars is the place to stay! The house was perfect in every detail, very inviting and extremely clean. Lance was a great host and very helpful. We vacationed with 6 adults and 7 teens. Everyone raved about how much fun they had. York Harbor is the place to be and The Briars is the place to stay!

Wonderful stay at The Briars

This was our fourth year staying at The Briars and we had a wonderful time as usual! The house has everything we needed and easily accommodated four families with young children. We love the proximity to the beach and other activities. Lance has always been very responsive and easy to work with!

Stayed there for a wedding

The house accommodated 12 of us very comfortably. The owner came by to say hello and make sure everything was comfortable and working well. Lance was very gracious and sent us a great list of things to do in York and surrounding area. The house is exceptionally well located. Easy to get to everything. We would go back again.

Family Reunion

Our entire family has not gotten together since all the babies have been born. This house was perfect! The rooms on 3 levels provided privacy while the beautiful common areas were great for socializing. I was so nervous about the event, but Lance put my mind to rest with his quick complete responses and his great suggestions. The lovely beach in walking distance was the icing on the cake.

Wonderful home!

We really enjoyed our stay at The Briars. Lance was great to work with. It's a great location in York. We could walk to nice restaurants. We were a group of 12 and had plenty of room and all had our own bathrooms. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch in the evenings. I recommend renting this big beautiful home. Maine is a wonderful state to see!

A great time in York!

My family and I had a great time in York! The house was awesome and fit all of us (16 people, including 3 babies and 2 older kids!) comfortably! We loved sitting out on the porch and at the fire pit; there was plenty of room for all of us to socialize. We appreciated the fact that there were beach chairs, linens, and other amenities provided so we didn't have to bring all of our own. We also got lucky with the weather, which was a huge plus. The host, Lance, was great and super helpful in answering all of our questions leading up to the trip. I highly recommend staying here and we will be back!

Yearly vacation with lifelong friends

This property was exactly as described and exactly what we needed for six couples to gather for our yearly trip together. The house was very spacious with many areas to sit and relax. The area within walking distance from the house was just spectacular. Lance answered any questions we had, typically within the hour or less. We will definitely recommend the property to others who are looking for a relaxing, quiet environment with many attractions that are within walking or driving distance.

Wicked Family Vacay!

We were a group of 20 - 3 sisters and 2 brothers and our families ( kids ranged from 31 to 10 yrs old). There was plenty of room for all of us! Our favorite place to hang out was the large front porch. Many days started and ended on the porch. It was the place to be. Our host, Lance was fantastic providing a list of must see and do while in York. We had a few minor electrical issues that Lance took care of right away. Our only wish would be for a larger kitchen as we like to cook. The kitchen was well-equipped just small for our liking but we made do. We all agreed we would stay at the Briars again.

Could have stayed forever!

This is a beautiful home with lots of space for the whole family and equipped with everything you need. The location is ideal. The property owner Lance was wonderful to work with and even popped over for a visit. It was great to meet him and learn about the history of the house, the area and his fond memories of growing up there. The local information he shared on beaches, restaurants, and things to do in the area was spot on. We definitely look forward to returning to "The Briars". It was well worth the journey from California!

Great place for a large group within walking distance to a small sweet beach!

This property is in a great location, clean & fits a large group with no problem! Lance is a great host & super attentive & helpful. The only reason for the 4 rating is that the kitchen is small & doesn’t offer much food storage & prep space for large groups. But this only applies if you do a lot of meal preparation for a large group. We have figured out how to make it work, but you need to be flexible! This was our groups second year and the kids all love it so much with the toy room and the bunk room!

Perfect Wedding Guest House

What an amazing house...perfect for 14 of our international wedding guests in York, Maine...most of whom were visiting the States for the 1st time! Was the perfect layout for people to have their own privacy but also to socialize, whether while cooking in the kitchen, having cocktails on the beautiful porch or roasting marshmallows in the fire pit out back. Even my husband and I saved a room for ourselves for our wedding night and loved waking up to a view of the York River from the top floor! The kitchen had every supply our guests needed and more. There were plenty of beach towels and chairs for guests to use to walk to the Harbor Beach. Absolutely beautiful house and wish I could get married again just so we could stay here again with all our friends! Thanks for everything!

great time and beautiful thanksgiving

Our short stay in Maine for the Thanksgiving went very well thanks to Lance’s perfect home and his very kind availability. In fact, the house is perfect for hosting a group of friends or a large family. Almost all the numerous rooms have their own bathroom and the common areas are specious enough (we used the large table in the dining a lot). The owner Lance is an extremely helpful and understanding person and he really did his best to accomodate all our requests ( he even bought us a pot to cook our turkey). Lance is truly the perfect home owner and it is also thanks to him that we had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Last but not least, I want to leave a small tip for him: the kitchen could be improved and I’m sure that Lance will treasure this suggestion.

Perfect for large families!!

This place was PERFECT for our BIG family - 9 kids and 9 adults, and we weren't tripping all over each other or invading each others' space constantly! Bedrooms all had plenty of room and were nicely done (bedroom on top floor PERFECT for kids - two bunkbeds with the lower bed on each having a full-size mattress), with plenty of well-appointed bathrooms. Main floor had a large kitchen (with everything we needed) with an eating nook with bench (perfect for the kids especially), and dining and living room were spacious and comfortable. There was even a nice sunroom with a daybed in it, where adults could relax and/or kids could play quietly. AND a nice front porch with roomy Adirondack chairs as well as a stone fire pit out back, PLUS plenty of off-street parking for 5 cars! It was a short and easy walk through quiet back streets and next to the water to get to the beach, which was beautiful as well and had nice walking paths adjacent to it. Plenty of good restaurants and activities (York Wild Kingdom with its amusement park was a GREAT place to spend a few hours with the kids), as well as outlet shopping. Honestly don't think we could've found a better place to stay, here or anywhere!

Fabulous house in a beautiful location!

We had a wonderful long-weekend stay at the Briars with family and friends (all adults) for a surprise 40th birthday get away. The Briars is a perfect mix of historic charm and modern convenience. The house was spotless and more spacious that it appeared in the photos. There was plenty of room for our group of 14 to both spend time together and to have space to ourselves. We had everything we needed without having to overpack—there are plenty of bedrooms/bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen and large dining room, a second refrigerator, towels and chairs for the beach, games, etc. We enjoyed having coffee on the front porch in the morning and spending the evening by the fire pit. The location is ideal. It’s in a beautiful neighborhood with ocean views and plenty to do within walking distance -- the beach/park, fisherman's walk to wiggly bridge, the Stage Neck Inn for dinner/drinks, cliff walk, etc. Lance was very helpful in making sure we had everything we needed, and he even showed us where to spot a bald eagle on our walk along the water. We loved our time at the Briars, and we look forward to returning for another trip!

Short but Very Enjoyable Stay

The house was in a wonderful location! It is on a lovely street that goes in to town. We LOVED the neighborhood-many wonderful walks to take in the area. It is in a neighborhood that looks like an enchanted village, right on the harbor. There are scenic walking trails close to the house and it is within walking distance to an upscale Inn/restaurant and the beach. There is spacious parking for 6 vehicles and plenty of room for up to 9 vehicles, outdoor seating, fire pit, and a nice fenced-in yard. Upstairs bedrooms fronting on York St were noisy all night, but others were not. The beds were comfortable- mattresses were fabulous. The quiet first floor bedroom was small but with a private bathroom. The bed was very comfortable but no space for clothing as it was lacking a chair, bureau or luggage rack, or closet. The living room, dining room, and front porch were spacious and well appointed. One of the bedrooms has been recently upgraded with a spa-like bath, double vanity, large shower and whirlpool. The dining room, where we spent all our time, was great-really big table, comfortable chairs, plenty of room. Large living room too, and great porch. The kitchen was small with little counter space. Only a few people could work on food prep at the same time because the appliances, although they all worked fine, are all crowded in one corner. The kitchen was small for such a large house with only one refrigerator (when in use, blocks the entry/exit door) and dishwasher, although a small kitchen on the third floor could be used as backup. There was no cable service available for the ample TVs and no batteries in most remotes and no instructions for their use. Wifi was strong on first floor only. Perhaps invest in a booster for the Wifi router. Great listing of "things to do & restaurants" in the area, but no emergency information listed (fire or police department, ambulance or hospital phone numbers). On Friday it was annoying to have the workers start cutting the lawn just after 7 am. Lance was a wonderful "host." He came by the house himself to make sure we were all right, if we needed anything. He told us about the walks in the area, where to eat, etc. We liked his enthusiasm. He also wrote many pages of things to do, many of which we did, and he said we could always do the tourist stuff, but these were places he knew about because he grew up in the area. All in all, we had a lovely experience for our short stay of 3 nights

This house almost seemed too good to be true…..but it lived up to the hype!!Stayed with my husband, our 3 children, 2 spouses & 2 grandchildren. There was plenty of room to be, both inside and out. Loved all the bedrooms & bathrooms options.Had a good amount of things for the kiddos, from a pack n play to a room full of toys and beach toys.Close to the beach and town, although town was small.

First off, this house and location are incredible. It’s centrally located to multiple walking paths, the beach, restaurants, shopping, you name it. Second, Lance (the host) was phenomenal. He was very detailed and super friendly. He provided information on the area and the house, including giving us a gift of wine and giftcard to the local ice cream shop (which was superb). He went above and beyond what a host should need to do but it made our experience that much better. One downfall was the heat - the house is very hot, especially on the third floor but there were fans and AC units that we could install and put around which made it a lot more comfortable. Don’t let this deter you from the property because it’s truly a gem!! We would absolutely go there again and if Lance has any other properties, he would be our go-to host. He was THAT good. Highly, highly recommend!

Fantastic place!

We were a large group of extended family and the place was perfect. Plenty of nice bedrooms and living spaces. The area was great - lots of places to walk. It was November, but a few of our group were daring and jumped in the ocean which was a quick walk away. The owner was very responsive. We had a minor issue (couldn't figure out how to turn on the porch light) which I messaged him about. He showed up in person at the house right away. Definitely recommend this house!

What an amazing home!!

We had the best stay here for our daughter's wedding weekend! Lance could not have been kinder! The house is amazing. It is so clean, warm, sunny, and bright. There is plenty of room for everyone, comfortable furniture, and beds. We could all pack into the front room to watch football at night. We enjoyed time on the front porch and also on the little roof deck. There are a bunch of Adirondack chairs out back so we could sit in the sun and chat during the day. We could walk to Foster's and The Ship's Cellar for dinner. The walking path down by the water was also fantastic. We wish this was our permanent home!

Reunion with old friends

We were a group of 14, made up of 7 fraternity brothers and their wives. The Briars accommodated us perfectly. We had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Everyone commented in how charming it was, and how welcoming it felt. There was plenty of space for all of us to congregate and reminisce. A great time was had by all. Lance always responded quickly throughout the planning process and during our stay (even though he was traveling himself). We couldn’t ask for a better host. We’re just wish we’d been able to meet him and thank him personally.
