Experience the delights of a rural seaside town that is overlooked by an extinct volcano and dazzles with its scenic setting and springtime tulips.

The seaside town of Wynyard sits at the mouth of the Inglis River on Tasmania’s northwest coast. The ocean and river support a range of water-based activities, while the surrounding countryside offers a quiet, scenic backdrop ripe for exploration.

Wynyard is in the shadow of a magnificent natural wonder, a 13-million-year-old volcano called Table Cape. Drive to the top of the cape, which rises up 180 metres (590.5 feet) above the sea. Stop by the viewing platform for the beautiful vistas of the Tasmanian coastline, then walk along the cliff-top path to the Table Cape Lighthouse. You can take a guided tour of the tower and learn about its history.

When you come back down from the cape, head for another geological wonder, Fossil Bluff. These ancient cliffs have yielded numerous fossils over the years. Among them, the remains of a marsupial that's thought to be approximately 25 million years old. Try and spot fossils, which are still embedded in the rocks. After your fossil hunt, swim, kayak and fish at the bluff’s beaches. Back in the town, enjoy more aquatic fun at East Wynyard Beach.

As you travel through the area, you will see a large patchwork of fields. At all times of year they are a gorgeous sight, but particularly in spring when tulips and lilies bloom and they are a riot of colour. For a few weeks in September and October, you can stroll through these flower fields when you visit the Table Cape Tulip Farm. If you are in Wynyard during this time, join the locals in celebrating the Bloomin' Tulips Festival, a 3-week celebration of the flowers.

Wynyard has several accommodation options. The town is easily accessible via car, ferry and plane. The Spirit of Tasmania ferry is located about 45 minutes away in Devonport, and Burnie Airport is directly outside the town. Stay for a while to make the most of the incredible scenery and outdoor pursuits.
