Named after Cornelis Lely, one of many who changed the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer.  Many buildings are plain ugly by all possible definitions, this one is a nice exception. Style: New pragmatism. The staff and the restaurant are great. The ambience is always good and the quirkiness of the former prison is fun to stay in. On the negative side, the room has not a single hook or hanger for a towel, the towels are too small and the toilet paper seems like genuine prison standard

We traveled across Afsluitdijk while touring in the Netherlands. It was truly impressive to see how the small nation has kept the sea at bay (no pun intended). At this stop near the middle of the structure, there is some history that explains how each stone was installed by hand, along with a great many other impressive metrics. Worth the trip.
