I booked this for my husband’s 50th birthday. I received an email stating check in time of 4 pm??? When I called the hotel, they were extremely unhelpful and said that’s the check in time if you book on Expedia as it’s a lot cheaper (£400 is cheap?). And was unbudging. The hotel is nothing special. Very impersonal. No turn down service. No fridge in the room. 3 power cuts in one night. Overall, nothing special and truly astounded by the apathetic service and dismissive attitude. Breakfast below average. Honestly don’t bother. So many more wonderful places to stay.

A simply exceptional stay
South Lodge exceeded all our expectations. This is truly a 5 Star hotel and the experience is the best we have ever had in a UK property. The staff were uniformly fantastic - helpful and extremely attentive. The room was clean, large and bright with great details and extremely comfortable. The food in Botanica was delicious and the bar food and cocktails were also great, the vibe very relaxed. The highlight of the property is the Spa with its amazing infinity pool, 3 different sauna and steam room options, an outside cold water pond pool for the brave, and a simply wonderful hydro pool where you can relax in hot bubbling water and look up at the stars on a crisp night. We will be back for sure - cannot recommend enough.

Average at best.
Having stayed at the hotel around 10 years, returned to experience the new spa. Promised an upgrade in advance of booking if there was availability but on arrival was told not possible despite the hotel not being very busy. The spa was decent for most part yet but disappointing that there was no whirlpool / jacuzzi indoors. The eating area has a lovely menu though you will need your sunglasses as the lighting is so bright it's quite unrelaxing in there. Treatments were good but were shorter than advertised yet charged at full rate. Our bedroom along with most of the main hotel could do with a revamp. Our bedroom smelt very musty and badly needed redecorating/refurnishing.

Absolutely the most amazing place I have ever stayed. Guest service is top notch. 👌 The place itself is too beautiful for words. Only grump we had is in the old house part of the junior suite there was no air conditioning and it was insane hot! Nothing a dive in the pool couldn't fix!

Very disappointed overall. First room for a family of 4 was way too small and the second room was near an exit so all day and night there was banging, people walking and talking. Then our belongings got stuck in the safe and we missed our dinner reservation as it took hours to open the safe. There was limited times for kids to use the pool even though i called and they said the pool can be used anytime without booking. The whole experience was unpleasant. We left at 9am as the kids were kept awake all night with the noise. There was no apology or understanding from the hotel. The cost of one nights stay was a waste. Please could you look into reimbursement?

It is a shame to read your review. However, I can, with confidence, say that the team did everything they could for you during your stay, and were extremely patient and understanding with all of your requirements. Despite arriving with your two children and your booking being for only 2 adults, I feel we were very accommodating and promptly changed your room to one with more space so that we could provide the extra beds required. I am sorry we could not provide the complimentary upgrade, for which you asked on a number of occasions, or breakfast to be included in your package despite booking a room only rate. It is a pity that you have not chosen to mention the fact that you set off the fire alarms, causing a significant inconvenience to other hotel guests and, whilst we accepted your apology, the same could not be said of you when the safe in your room inadvertently stuck. I know that the team reacted very quickly and had the matter resolved within the hour (not hours as suggested in your feedback) and we also graciously offered (and you accepted) for you to have dinner with our compliments as a result of the inconvenience. You also fail to mention the complimentary bottle of Ridgeview provided by way of recognition of your anniversary. When you were advised that you did not need to book the pool and could use the facilities at any time it was on the basis that you had booked for 2 adults only. Had you advised that you would be bringing children with you we would have communicated our splash times to you. We absolutely will not be looking into reimbursement in this case and consider the matter closed. Kind regards David Connell General Manager

Birthday treat
We had a lovely stay although it was only one night we wished we could have stayed longer. This was our second visit, we first visited 4 years ago. We enjoyed the food and wine and the atmosphere and ambiance was good. Our room was very nice although there were a lot of stains on the carpet near the table with the tea and coffee. As we only stayed one night I feel that it would be nice to have an earlier check in. But overall we enjoyed our stay.

The stay was during our 1st anniversary week but due to eat out to help out, no provisions were made for us to book afternoon tea or the spa which we came in for- it wasn't mentioned to book up front. In the end, we simply stayed in a 5 star resort, which although beautiful didn't really give me or my wife any satisfaction.

Great Birthday Treat
A great experience for my wife's 30th. Had a spa treatment as well as taking advantage of all the facilities. Great meal in the evening with great service. Room was great, very comfortable and spacious. All the staff were really helpful and had great knowledge, nothing was too much.

I visited this spa hotel with my sister in law as a birthday treat. The outdoor natural pool is glorious, the spa facilities lovely and food fantastic. Our room was huge with two king-size beds. All in all a fabulous weekend.

Room for improvement - terrible service!!
Botanica Restaurant -Extremely Poor and Unprofessional Service- Restaurant staff were very rude when we weren’t happy with one of the dishes from the menu, we asked politely if it could be changed. When we went back for the evening meal another waiter mentioned he had heard we sent something back and rolled his eyes. Totally unprofessional and rude! Food- amazing if you are gluten free and vegan. Some slightly odd options so make sure you ask what they are. We had the Beef and Seabass and it was really great. Shame it was served with such attitude! Also found all the staff with pink hair a little unprofessional, let’s hope it was for charity! Rooms are very dated, single glazed windows so it was very cold during the night. Some of the plugs for the bedside lamps were also hanging off the wall. Signs in the hotel- it was very hard to navigate around the hotel, there are lots of hidden doors, its was like a maze, they really need to add more signage. It took us 15mins to get from hotel to spa literally due to getting lost and we asked about 4 members of staff for directions. Spa- great new spa and really enjoyed the experience but couple of things which could have been improved, the outdoor pool could have been a couple of degrees warmer. The sauna was also not as hot as a sauna should be. Treatments- massage was great no complaints there, the express facial was total waste of money £60 for someone literally washing my face.

Lovely hotel - old English manor House in the country with modern facilities. The Spa has a beautiful indoor infinity pool overlooking the extensive gardens. There are a several dining options including lighter modern sharing plates and traditional fine dining. Staff are wonderful!

A truly exceptional stay. The most beautiful room, impeccable service from the friendliest staff. We were treated like royalty with our every want and need catered for. The spa is stunning and a fantastic addition to the hotel, the Botanical restaurant was amazing as usual and afternoon tea was the perfect way to end our stay.

Excellent hotel, pleasant stay
We stayed in the Family room. Service on arrival and checkout was professional. The room and the bathroom were spacious with cozy decor. Bed was comfortable with your choice of pillows (my choice was lavender and honey and the scent was pleasant). Amenities were good. Restaurant atmosphere was comfortable and food was delicious. Overall it was an excellent hotel with very pleasant environment.

Superb South Lodge
It was great to return to South Lodge and enjoy the newly opened spa! We also ate at the 'Pass' restaurant which was amazing!
