I had someone come into my room because the front desk card key was down so they gave someone the key to my room. It happened twice. The phone was not working. They had one working elevator. Housekeeping came in and put the washcloths on the floor and didn’t replace them. We waited for over an hour for replacements. We got back to the room and our door key wasn’t working we had to go all the way back to the front desk waiting for the elevator for a long time just to get new keys.

We had high hopes with our stay at the Watergate being one of DC’s 5 star hotels. The valet staff who greeted us were very helpful. The front desk staff was mostly mumbling through the details during our check in process and I wasn’t able to get a map for the city when I requested one. One day we returned to find someone else’s old, dirty hair brush on the desk in our room. I tried to bring that to housekeeping’s attention and wasn’t able to run into one housekeeping staff who can speak English for our entire multiple nights stay. Other than one day, we never return to the hotel room with ice in the ice bucket and couldn’t locate an ice dispenser. We found food crumps in between the mattress and the night stand that were very easily observable. One of the usb slots between the beds is so loose it barely holds the plug in, while the other slot just doesn’t work. The electric plug area behind desk was covered with a thick layer of dust while we plugged our laptop in. Used robe on floor and toiletries were not replaced. Trash can was placed on top of toilet. During checkout, I went to the front desk to notify them of my departure time and the time to retrieve my car, but was told I should call from room instead. I returned to room to find the phone doesn’t work. I have to borrow a phone from housekeeping working in another room to call the front desk. Car returned with a light scratch. This stay fell short of my expectations from a 5 star hotel in an international city.

We had a nice quick 1 night getaway and enjoyed our stay. Everyone that works at the property is extremely kind and attentive from the front desk to the valet to the bartender. We enjoyed the pool area but the hot tub was kind of a very warm small pool and there were a lot of kiddos around so it’s not super relaxing but we still really enjoyed it! (only mentioning this for those who are expecting a quiet hot tub scenario). We enjoyed drinks in the bar before going out for dinner downtown and they were delicious! I would stay here again. View of the river from our room was really great- I wish I brought my binoculars for bird watching!

The good:The property and the rooms were amazing. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The bad: Check in was at 4, a room wasn't ready until about 6. They upgraded my room to a slightly larger one but I had paid for a river view for valentines day and the one that was ready was a garden view. So we then waited another 45 minutes until the room I originally paid for was ready. It's bad enough check-in is hours later than most places but waiting as long as we did was unacceptable. I doubt we will come back, it definitely dampened the mood for valentines day.

I didn’t like that there was no coffee service in the room and there was no room service after 10. I also had a hard time getting in touch with the front desk with the room telephone. I had to use my own cell phone and call the hotel to speak to the front desk!!! Expected more from a five star hotel. However I had a gorgeous room with a beautiful view and Housekeeping did a wonderful job every day. The front office staff and the Bellman were super kind and always helpful. Even the engineer was super helpful. Overall, it was a nice stay.
