Lying across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown is the historic New Zealand station of Walter Peak High County Farm. A popular attraction, which most visitors reach by taking the TSS Earnslaw from Queenstown’s Steamer Wharf, it is a beautiful and fascinating spot where you can learn so much more about the rich heritage of this region.
When you journey on the steamship across Lake Wakatipu and alight at Walter Peak, you’ll get to enjoy a delicious barbecue lunch at the Walter Peak homestead. You’ll instantly discover why this farm is so popular when you enjoy a taste of its produce.
Take a tour which will take you around the farm and homestead to uncover its history and how it works today. As a working sheep and cattle farm, you can find out about the traditional farming techniques used here. You’ll even get to see the working sheepdogs in action.
The fields surrounding the farm are part of the beautiful unspoilt landscape. Ride a horse across the hills of Walter Park accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will tell you more about the farm and the region, as well as help you if this is your first time on horseback.
Alternatively, you can hire a mountain bike or even bring your own and head out to explore the area on one of the station’s guided bike tours. With some great trails that will take you around the mountain, the spot is very popular among the more hard-core mountain bikers.
The TSS Earnslaw Steamship departs from Queenstown three times a day, and will take you right to Walter Peak High County Farm. Your boat ticket will include entry to the station, a tour round the grounds, as well as lunch. The farm is open daily all through the year.
