University of Kansas Tours and Activities

Sunset lights up the tower of Dyche Hall home to KU's Natural History Museum. The museum is open to visitors for a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 and older. It's been years since I've been inside but as a child I loved to watch the beehive under glass for hours.

More of the cleared and stained exhibit. It's tucked away on the far south side of the top floor past all the case displays. Probably my new favorite thing in the museum.
Comanche was the only living member of the 7th Calvary left alive to be discovered by US troops arriving to the battleground after the battle at Little Bighorn. He was nursed back to health but was retired from service and lived the rest of his life at nearby Ft. Riley where the 7th had been stationed. Like many of the specimens here he was originally displayed at the 1893 world's fair. I remember visiting Comanche as a child and he looked like he had seen better days, but in 2005 they did a restoration and new display and now he's looking noble as ever. This display is even more meaningful to me after visiting the battleground at Little Bighorn and witnessing a ranger recounting the battle in an unbelievably poignant performance. The display is sort of out of the way in a room past the stairwell on the same floor as the panorama, head towards the elevator instead of turning up the stairs and you will find it.
Dusk looking out over the valley below Mount Oread. Nothing beats wandering this scenic campus to the sound of the carillon bells which sound every quarter hour. On Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoons faculty or students perform on the instrument. Wander the green space around Potters Lake during a concert for a truly magical experience. The campanile is a WWII memorial, so be sure to check out the structure itself too.
