Grab your surfboard and follow the steps down to this world-famous break, hidden away beneath one of Bali’s most impressive temples.

While it might be famous to surfers the world over, this beach is tucked away beneath rugged cliffs accessible only by steep rocky steps cut into the cliff face. On the top of the cliff sits the ancient Uluwatu Temple.Paddle your board out into the ocean to be greeted by set after set of powerful, hollow waves sculpted to perfection by the offshore south-easterly winds. Pause to get catch your breath and you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the cliff top temple. Look back to sea to catch a glimpse of turtles gliding beneath the surface. You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy this wonderful place. There is plenty to enjoy with ocean views, incredible sunsets and the temple itself. Dating back to the 10th Century, the temple is directional, meaning it was built to protect the island from evil spirits. There is a choice of local warungs (restaurants) should you wish to eat and plenty of opportunity to sit and relax while watching the sunset as the waves crash beneath you.Due to the powerful surf and difficult beach access, Uluwatu is for experienced surfers only. Similarly, swimming in the sea is not recommended. For calmer waters ideal for swimming, head to Badang or Bingin beaches. For more surfing adventures, head to the breaks at Impossibles, Dreamland and Suluban beaches. Located next to the village of Pecatu in south Kuta, Uluwatu Beach is a 35-minute drive from Denpasar Airport. The beach has parking and shower facilities. Surfers are advised to bring their own equipment although there is a surf shop above the beach stocking wax and other basic equipment.

The area we stayed in front of had slippery rocks that needed to be walked over before getting to the water. Tip: do you homework about the beach frontage of your accommodation.
