The Mollymook beach in Ulladulla, New South Wales, Australia.

Surrounded by breathtaking national parks, this harbour town is known for its beautiful and diverse landscapes, nearby surf beaches and sizeable fishing community.

Named after the Dhurga Aboriginal word for “safe harbour”, the attractive town of Ulladulla sits between two forested headlands in the coastal Shoalhaven region. With its sheltered natural harbour and proximity to magnificent national parks, Ulladulla is a charming spot to drop an anchor or explore the bush. Check out the pioneering history in nearby Milton and investigate fascinating local Aboriginal heritage trails amid breathtaking heathland and banksia forests.

Play in the waves at Mollymook Beach, a stunning golden-sand beach patrolled by lifeguards. It frequently has good surf swells. The Ulladulla sea pool also offers safe swimming conditions. Grab your fishing rod and drop a line at Ulladulla Harbour or check out Lake Conjola and Burrill Lake. Join a deep-sea fishing charter and take in beautiful coastal views or spot migratory whales in the cooler months. Go scuba diving amid the local reef formations with local dive operators.

Explore Ulladulla’s wonderful surrounding national parks with a hiking or camping trip in the native bushland. Check out Morton National Park, situated to the west of Ulladulla, which is crowned by Didhol (Pigeon House Mountain). Check out the mesmerising landscapes of the South Pacific Heathland Reserve and Meroo National Park. Follow the Coomee Nulunga Cultural Trail to learn about the stories of the local Aboriginal Yuin people and to spot Garawanda Daran (Dreaming Poles), which depict the local names of the area’s flora and fauna.

Finish your day in Ulladulla with a meal of delicious fish and chips from the wharf while watching the sun set over the headlands. If you visit Ulladulla during Easter, don’t miss the annual Blessing of the Fleet festival, which features celebrations, fireworks and a harbour market.

Ulladulla is just over a 3-hour drive from Sydney, on the stunning South Coast of New South Wales. Consider taking public transport so you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. Trains on the South Coast Line go to Bomaderry (Nowra) and then connect with regional buses bound for Ulladulla.
