Originally opened as a local wildlife sanctuary by the parents of famed “crocodile hunter” Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo has grown over the last 30 years to include animals and exhibits from all over the world as well as one of the world’s biggest wildlife hospitals. The world-famous animal lover, who was killed tragically by a stingray in 2006, grew up feeding and handling crocodiles and turned his talents into a successful worldwide television series. He invested the earnings from his hugely popular show in to turning his parents project into one of the country’s top tourist attractions.

Come to the bustling Mooloolaba Esplanade to dine or shop with a view of the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean. Along with the beach, the boat harbor and rock wall of The Spit, this central strip is a highlight along the scenic Mooloolaba waterfront.

You can touch starfish and other friendly creatures in a shallow pool. Watch your favourite animals being fed and seals interact with their trainers.

For most people of the time, the glass furnace chimneys of 18th-century Yorkshire might have seemed a world away from the rock formations of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. However, they were similar enough in the eyes of Captain James Cook for him to bestow the name Glasshouse Mountains on the volcanic peaks at the centre of this wonderful national park. Formed from the interiors of 26-million-year-old volcanoes, these unique formations have long been a sacred place for the native Aboriginal people in the region. In fact, there are protected sites to this day where spiritual ceremonies still take place.
