Top places to visit

1. Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace's romantic story combined with its beautiful baroque design have made it one of the most popular wedding venues in the world. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, had the palace built for his mistress Salome Alt. Von Raitenau's profession meant that he wasn't allowed to marry, and his attempt to get a special dispensation from the pontifex to do so failed. To get around this, he built Mirabell Palace on what was then the edge of Salzburg, and they lived together there until his death, having a total of 16 children.

It’s encompassed by three striking mountain ranges, including the majestic Kitzbühler Alps. Make the most of the resort’s excellent facilities as you enjoy the various activities offered by the winter Ski Circus. 4. Salzburg Cathedral

In 774 the Bishop Virgil founded a cathedral at the site of a Roman town called Juvavum. Over the centuries, it suffered the ravages of eight different fires. The worst of these was in 1598, when the building was left largely in ruins. From the ashes sprung the beauty of Baroque architecture we can still see today. Designed by the famed architect Santino Solari, it has achieved fame across the continent.

5. Getreidegasse

From the late 16th century through the early part of the 17th, Getreidegasse Lane was a main route from the city to Bavaria. Home to wealthy merchants, many of the “great and the good” of Salzburg society lived here. This legacy can be seen in the wonderful ornate architecture found on the street: wrought-iron signs and portal windows adorn the distinctively narrow and tall buildings of the time.

6. Hellbrunn Palace

Young and old will be delighted by the pranks played by the many ornate Trick Fountains in the splendid gardens of Hellbrunn Palace. Set among 60 hectares of verdant gardens, this is a favourite local spot for hanging out and taking in the sun – and the Wasserspiele (Trick Fountains) ensure that there's plenty to keep children happy here too. Shrieks of delight and surprise are to be heard echoing through the air on summers’ days, as the many ponds and statues, grottoes and sculptures from Greek mythology shoot water out at unexpected times and from surprising angles.

7. Upper Krimml Waterfall

Falling from a dizzying 1,246 feet (380 meters) high, the Krimml Waterfalls are truly spectacular. Not only are they the highest in Austria, but one of the highest in all of Europe. Enjoy a day hiking the 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) trail to the very top of the falls and experience the powerful cascades and abounding beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park in which they sit.
