This park is the green heart of central Osaka, complete with expansive lawns, charming rose archways, Japanese heritage sites and peaceful ponds.
Tennoji Park is a green oasis, hidden among Osaka’s tall buildings and busy streets. The park provides a welcome refuge in the centre of the city and is the perfect place to relax in between visits to surrounding attractions.
The park dates back to 1909 but was renovated in 1990 and again in 2013 to include a walking circuit, flowerbeds and a traditional Japanese garden. Take some time to visit this century-old garden and discover how the city evolved around it.
The park’s courtyard entrance is brightly decorated with colourful flowerpots, statues and a tower. In the south of the park, visit a sunken garden and a romantic path beneath archways laden with climbing roses. Visit in spring to experience the full aroma of the blooming roses.
Take a seat and unwind by the Kawazokoike Pond. This quiet water feature is bordered by traditional Japanese Keitakuen gardens and is said to be the remainder of an ancient canal built in 788. More history can be discovered at the Chausuyama mound, thought to be an ancient burial site.
On the third Sunday of each month, informative guided tours operate in the greenhouse and reveal the background of the park and stories from its long history.
Tennoji Park has many of its own features but can also be used as a central hub for visiting other nearby attractions. See clear views of the Tsūtenkaku Tower to the west and visit Osaka’s exciting centre. Give yourself time to check out the Tennoji Zoo next door. The Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Art is located close by and features Chinese calligraphy and famous Japanese artworks.
The park is open during regular business hours, except on Mondays, when it’s closed. There’s a small admission fee. Parking is available nearby, although the city’s subway system is efficient and a more convenient option than tackling Osaka’s traffic.
