"The hotel is right next to the national park so great for hiking. The hotel is also in the centre of Saariselkä which is compact and pedestrian friendly so this makes it easy if you’re using buses to get in and out of town and don’t have a vehicle. Breakfast and dinner at the restaurant are good. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff are friendly. Be aware that activities book out and so if you want to do more than hiking you’ll need to plan and book ahead."

Wilderness Hotel Muotka & Igloos

10/10 Excellent

"We stayed three nights in the aurora igloo and it was the highlight of our Lapland trip, falling asleep under a glass roof and watching the northern lights dance above us was pure magic. Warm, cozy and comfortable, in a peaceful spot far from city lights. And the food was fantastic! Friendly staff, everything well organized. Highly recommended ,we'd love to come back! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"Amazing property"

Gáldu Hotel & Spa

10/10 Excellent

"Gáldu Hotel and Spa is an idyllic spot for a truly relaxing getaway. The food was incredible, and although the location is slightly remote, it hardly matters when the hotel’s facilities are of such a high standard. Breakfast was next level — a beautifully presented buffet with plenty of choice, alongside freshly prepared hot options. The spa was also a fantastic experience, clearly well maintained and thoughtfully managed. What really stood out was the staff. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and attentive, and it’s clear the owners have put a great deal of care and thought into every detail of the hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay!"

Santa's Hotel Tunturi

10/10 Excellent

"Amazing breakfast included in the room cost 7-10am, got a free upgrade to a suite with a personal sauna in our room, perfectly located in the middle of the village. Maybe 5-7 minute walk to the top of the village and 20th to the downhill ski resort. 3 min walk to the trails. Everything was amazing!"

It's centred around the Gold Museum, which provides an engaging insight into the region's gold rush past. You'll find a few accommodation options, a restaurant, and various small shops all within easy walking distance, giving you direct access to the village's activities and the surrounding wilderness. For families, staying in the Gold Village is ideal. When is the best time to go to Tankavaara?

The best time to go to Tankavaara depends entirely on whether you prefer winter or summer activities, with distinct seasons offering completely different experiences. For those eager to experience the classic Lapland winter, late November to April is ideal. During this period, you'll find reliable snow cover, great for activities like husky sledging, reindeer sleigh rides, and snowmobiling. The short daylight hours in December and January also increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, which are often at their most spectacular in the clear, cold skies. This time of year is excellent for couples looking for a romantic, snowy getaway or families hoping to meet Santa Claus. If you prefer the warmer months and the "Midnight Sun," then June to August is the best time to visit. The sun doesn't set for several weeks, offering endless daylight for hiking, gold panning, and exploring the surrounding fells. This period is particularly good for active families and solo travellers who enjoy outdoor adventures without the extreme cold.
