April 2011 Ilaman, Ahaggar mountains, Sahara Ahaggar or Hoggar mountains are the rockiest and highest part of Sahara desert some 1.500 km down from Algeria coast. It is mostly highland plateau with altitude of 2.000 metres made of volcanic material ca. 2 million years old. In some places there are the remaining spikes of volcanic cones rising like the one called Ilaman with its appealing peak 2.760 m high. Water and wind eroded the surface to strangely beautiful stones of all sizes, shapes and colour shades. The structure in front is a simple sanctuary of local Touareg people. The name Touareg means "forgotten by God" and they were titled so by the more orthodox muslims in the past. They practice the islam faith but in their way... No fancy mosques in the desert, just small structures made of stone and wood.. Make a round trip from Tamanrasset with friendly local agencies to see it! #sahara

April 2011 Iharen peak or Pic Lapperine, Ahaggar mountains, Sahara, Algeria Iharen is a beautiful volcanic scoria cone peak near Tamanrasset en route to Assekrem in Ahaggar mountains in Central Sahara. Its altitude is 1.732 metres and its second name is after French general who lived and died in Sahara in 1920. Actually Tamanrasset was originally named Fort Lapperine. Iharen is popular spot for climbers however just the view from below is amazing.
April 2011 Assekrem, Ahaggar mountains, Sahara This is enjoying the sunrise in the heart of Sahara in Ahaggar mountains in Assekrem (=End of the world)... An essence of travelling moments with companions for me :) lifelong memories that will never fade...
