Historic ruins stand beside restaurants and bars on the grassy mound that borders this riverside valley. Visit the market here and one of Stuttgart’s oldest churches.

Nestled in a valley between the Wangener Berg and the Neckar River, Wangen comprises a narrow strip of intriguing landmarks against a scenic natural backdrop. Reach many of its historic relics via paths meandering up the grassy knoll. Enjoy a relaxing walk along the riverside promenade and bask in the serenity, away from the city center.

A little southwest of the heart of Wangen is the 13th-century Michaelskirche, one of the oldest churches in Stuttgart. Admire its Romanesque design and well-preserved choir tower. Visit the adjacent cemetery and examine the medieval tombs.

Reach the Marktplatzbrunnen square and go for a walk through the narrow alleys that skirt the district’s half-timbered and art nouveau structures. Bring your kids to the Spielplatz Weißensteinerstrasse playground near the river.

Bordering the southwestern side of the neighborhood is the Wangener Berg. Walk up and down its historic network of paths known as the Wangener Höhe and stop at some of the eclectic restaurants adorning the sloping terrain. Spot some of the historical vestiges hidden on the mound, such as the Burgbrünnele capstone of a former aqueduct. Engraved on its side is the image of a flutist.

Chat with friendly locals on these hiking trails and snap photos of the monuments and buildings among the gardens and vineyards. Take in the sights, sounds and smells of Wangen by heading to the stalls of the weekly Wochen Market on Wednesday mornings. The market is held within the fire department building, which was constructed in 1713. Note that it has long been used as a site for pressing wine.

Flanking the western bank of the Neckar River, the Wangen area lies in the eastern suburbs of Stuttgart. Ride the U-Bahn to Im Degen, Inselstraße, Wasenstraße or Wangen Marktplatz and get around the district on foot. Alternatively, the S-Bahn station of Untertürkheim is just across the water.

Wangen offers stunning views of the river and verdant hills enclosing it.
