For nearly five decades, visitors have been ascending Bob’s Peak to enjoy the stunning views across Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. It's all thanks to the Skyline Gondola, which takes you across the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest cable car line. As well as its panoramic views, the car also connects you to the mountain biking and hiking trails as well as the paragliding spots on the mountain.
As you ascend in your gondola car, you’ll get to enjoy 220-degree views of this beautiful region as you ride above the Skyline’s luge track. Look out from the safety of your spacious carriage and you may spot the paragliders launching from atop Bob’s Peak.
When you make it to the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping and stunning views of Ben Lomond, Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown, perfect for photographs. You can also explore the trails around the area if you want to go biking or hiking. Or, if you like a real adventure, head for the bungee jumping platform, or try a number of other exhilarating activities.
Combine your gondola trip with one of Skyline’s cultural experiences. Take in a performance of the Kiwi Haka, the famous battle dance of the Maoris, at the summit of Bob’s Peak. Their regular shows also include traditional Maori tales, but it’s recommended you make a reservation as each show has a limited capacity for just 77 visitors.
There’s a restaurant at the top of the gondola ride, where you can have a buffet dinner accompanied by views of the picturesque sunset over Queenstown.
Operating every day through the year, the Skyline Gondola is easily accessed from downtown Queenstown by bus. Some parking spaces are also available at the foot of the mountain.
