Enjoy the solitude and scenery and learn of the horrors of shipwrecks off the foggy and perilous West African coast.

Shipwrecks and dramatic coastal scenery are the attractions of the spectacular Skeleton Coast National Park. It runs across an area of 6,504 square miles (16,845 square kilometers). Rent a four-wheel drive for your tour around this vast and picturesque region.

Make your way to the seal colony in the Cape Cross area where, during breeding season, some 200,000 of the majestic creatures gather. Snap photos of the ocean, which appears to be made of seals due to their sheer numbers. Among the exceptional highlights of the park are the colorful lichen fields, composed of algae and fungus. These brilliantly colored, mossy fields are a stark contrast to the arid desert and beaches.

Gaze up at some of the varied birdlife in the park, which is home to over 200 species. Relax on one of the many unspoiled beach areas, far from crowds and the bustle of city life. You can walk along the coast for hours without encountering another soul. Bring watersports gear to try surf angling on the water.

Spot a range of wildlife in the desert, including zebras, hyenas and baboons. The park takes its name from the skeletons and ship hulks dotted around its terrain. Hear the tragic tales of the many shipwrecks that occurred just off the coast here.

Enter through one of the main gates at the Ugab River mouth and the region of Springbokwasser. Note that the salt roads are hazardous after rain. You must enter the park before late afternoon and depart before sunset. Stay overnight at a campsite and look up at the starry night sky.

The Skeleton Coast National Park runs along the northwestern coastline of Namibia. Get to the Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport in the center of the country and rent a car. Drive northwest for about 400 miles (640 kilometers) to reach the park. Visit nearby landmarks, such as Palmwag, Etosha National Park and the Torra Conservancy.
