Find a quiet place of reflection and tranquility at this historic Buddhist temple, which has traditional pagodas and a garden filled with turtles.

Put aside a few hours to explore the different sights at the Shitennoji Temple, regarded as one of the most impressive Buddhist temples in the world. The temple is surrounded by tranquil gardens. Wander around to discover authentic Buddhist artefacts and learn about the history of Buddhism in Japan.

Shitennoji Temple was built in 593 after war was waged between Buddhists and followers of traditional Japanese gods. Prince Shotoku built the temple as an expression of the newly introduced religion’s power. The temple is still an extravagant testament to Buddhism, with much of the original design evident today.

Visit the temple’s inner area and central courtyard, topped with a five-level pagoda. Climb the stairs to the top to take in the view over the grounds. Watch your head as you ascend, as many of the doorways are quite small. Temple-goers have been looking out this same vista for more than 1,000 years.

Wander through the Main Hall to see a statue of Prince Shotoku. Learn the story of the Shakyamuni Buddha depicted in wall murals. Plan to visit early in the morning to enjoy the temple at its most peaceful and to capture a magnificent sunrise.

Walk over to the lush Gokuraki-jodo Garden. This ancient garden was designed around the Western Gardens of Buddhist mythology. Take a few moments to experience the garden’s sights and sounds. See the turtles that swim around the ponds and laze on the stones.

The temple features an impressive treasure house filled with heritage Japanese paintings, scripts and artefacts. Check the treasure house’s rotating exhibition program online before your visit to find out what’s on.

On the 21st or 22nd of each month, the temple grounds become a busy marketplace. Peruse the local stalls and pick up souvenirs, food and traditional cold soba noodle soup.

Visit Shitennoji Temple any day of the year from morning until afternoon. The inner precinct, Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the treasure house have separate but affordable admission prices. Reach the temple with Osaka’s convenient metro system or take advantage of the ample on-site parking.
