Fantastic fun and fascinating facts go hand-in-hand at this engaging and educational attraction.

The Science Museum of Virginia offers a dazzling array of interactive exhibits that bring the world of science alive. Children and adults will love the state-of-the-art demonstrations, expert-led experiments and the fascinating artefacts that explain everything from the workings of the smallest cells in our body to the largest cosmic phenomena. Five permanent exhibitions are complemented by daily presentations, and the museum also boasts an IMAX DOME cinema.

Step inside this former train station, past the neo-classical pillars, and begin your journey into the wondrous world of science. You’ll discover what really takes place under your skin when you head to The Body Human exhibition. Embark on a journey through the human body to learn how your cells function, what role genes and DNA play and how your brain interprets signals from each of your five senses.

At the opposite end of the scale, Out Of This World will show you how much you would weigh on Mars, and how gravity keeps the planets of the solar system from flying out into deep space. This is your chance to examine genuine moon rock, and even climb into a space capsule!

The daily Live Science presentations are not to be missed. You’ll be amazed by basketball-playing rats, trained by animal behaviour experts. See metal shatter in front of your eyes, thanks to the effect of liquid nitrogen. And, if your stomach is strong enough, watch the live dissection of a bull’s eye.

After exploring the exhibits, head to the IMAX DOME cinema theatre and take a seat in front of the vast 23-metre screen. You may find yourself heading out across the arctic with a family of polar bears, riding a raft down the Colorado River rapids, or flying out to distant galaxies.

Ticket prices vary according to the attractions included. Do check the museum’s website for the current presentation times and IMAX film schedules. Opening times are 9:30 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday, and 11:30 am to 5 pm on Sundays. Free parking is available on-site, and many bus routes stop nearby.
