Art fans shouldn't miss this lively centre of arts activity located in the heart of the Silicon Valley.
Small but perfectly formed, the San Jose Museum of Art focuses on both modern and contemporary art. SJMA was established in 1969, and presents art ranging from modern masterpieces to recent works by young, emerging artists. The Museum’s permanent collection of more than 2000 artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries has a special focus on West Coast art. It is also gaining a great reputation as a supporter of cutting-edge interactive art, which given its location in the centre of the tech industry, is a sensible move.In the permanent collection, you will find paintings, drawings and works in other traditional media, as well as new media pieces. While the collection isn't massive, the curators rotate exhibits frequently so there is always something new to see. They also create different exhibitions that explore particular themes or present interesting juxtapositions.There is a fine roster of temporary exhibits as well: currently an exhibition on the work of photographer Annie Leibowitz is on as well as an ambitious three-part exhibit called “Around the Table: Food, Creativity, Community”. This exhibit invites visitors to see, smell, taste and reflect through the installations from Bay Area artists that include a massive roti labyrinth and a fragrant curry mural.Free guided tours of the museum leave the entrance lobby twice a day or you can pick up an audio tour and explore at your own pace. If you are inspired by what you see, visitors can take part in art-making activities in the galleries. The museum is located downtown in the historic post office building and its adjoining annex. The museum is open from 11 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Sunday, except major holidays. There is an admission charge to get in
